Services
At Ohio Northern University, the focus of the Office of Multicultural Development (OMD) is the complete success of the students it serves. The OMD strives to lead the campus community in a celebration of diversity through academic and social programming while being the unwavering voice of the multicultural student.
The OMD recruits, retains, nurtures and supports the multicultural students on campus by advancing each student’s academic, social, humanitarian and spiritual growth. Programming and services are created by a dedicated staff lead by the Director of OMD, Clyde W. Pickett. The OMD supports the involvement of diverse students in all facets of campus life.
Created to address the needs of a rapidly changing student demographic, the OMD was established in 1991. The office humbly began on the second floor of the McIntosh Center.
The Office of Multicultural Development’s original purpose was the development and implementation of programs to serve the multicultural student. Using academic and extracurricular activities, the popularity of the office expanded. One of the more popular events became the People in Celebration of Diversity Series. By addressing a different monthly topic then presenting a corresponding program, multiculturalism on campus became recognized and respected. Other programs developed by the OMD were co-sponsored by student organizations and increased campus-wide participation in celebration of diversity.
While the personnel, location and identity of OMD have changed over the years its purpose has remained the same. A multicultural component is necessary for the holistic education of today’s college student. To make this a reality, the OMD assists with cooperative unity on behalf of the multicultural student.
