A summer in Hawaii would appeal to most people as a vacation destination. For Mandi Dodson, however, an internship opportunity at the Joint POW-MIA Accounting Command/Central Identification Laboratory (JPAC/CIL) was even more lucrative.

Students Attend Social Studies Convention

On Friday March 27, six ONU students and Professor Russ Crawford attended the Ohio Council for the Social Studies Annual Convention in Worthington. Along with Crawford, Matt Fox (SR Social Studies, Cardington, OH), Brian Hoefel (SR Social Studies, Akron, OH), and Aaron Stiger (SR Social Studies, Wapakoneta, OH) presented a session on Using Sport to Teach the Social Studies to the secondary teachers gathered there.

AMA Chapter Attends National Conference

Eleven members of the ONU American Marketing Association (AMA), along with advisor Randall Ewing, associate professor of marketing, attended the organization's national conference in New Orleans. This collegiate conference provides competitive, educational, leadership and career opportunities. The conference was attended by 1,300 marketing students representing 126 universities from across the country.

ONU Chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi Wins Governor’s Cup

Ohio Northern University's Sigma chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi garnered the prestigious "Governor's Cup" award at the North Central District Convention, held March 27-29 in Toledo, Ohio.

This the first time the Sigma chapter has won the Governor's Cup, the highest honor that Kappa Kappa Psi, a national honorary band fraternity, gives to its chapters. It is awarded based on the strength of a presentation, plus the completeness of a binder and extensive questionnaire. ONU's Sigma chapter competed against 30 other district chapters to win the award.

SIFE Team is First Runner-up at Regional Competition

The Ohio Northern University Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) garnered the first runner-up position at the SIFE USA Regional Competition on March 24 in Cincinnati, Ohio.

The regional competition was comprised of 19 four-year institutions and three two-year colleges. The event was one of 16 SIFE USA Regional Competitions held throughout March and April. The winners from all regional competitions will proceed to SIFE's National Exposition in Philadelphia, Pa., from May 10-12. This is the fourth year that ONU SIFE has placed as one of the top two teams.

Construction Estimating Team Places Second in State

Estimating TeamThe Ohio Northern University construction estimating team finished second at the ninth annual Ohio Contractors Association (OCA) Estimating Competition in Columbus, Ohio, on Feb. 27-28.

This marks the second consecutive year that ONU has placed as one of the top two schools in this competition. Last year, ONU captured first.

Honorary Receives Chapter Honor

Ohio Northern's Gamma Mu Chapter of Tau Beta Sigma National Honorary Band Sorority has been selected by the organization's national council as a chapter leadership finalist for the 2007-2009 biennium. The honor also makes the chapter a nominee for the Grace and A. Frank Martin Chapter Leadership Award, which will be presented at the 2009 national convention.

Jenny Zavicar, a senior in accounting from Onsted, Mich., is chapter president. Stacey Ward, BSBA '95, is the chapter sponsor.

Management Major Puts Engines, Entrepreneurship Skills to the Test

Performance has been business management senior Curtis See’s main priority for quite some time now. Not only has he been riding motorcycles and driving cars that he has personally modified for speed and control since he was 16, he is applying that passion and skill to the Nascent 500 Business Plan Challenge.

“It’s very ego-driven and male dominated,” says See of the modified vehicle industry. “It’s all about speed, control and performance. It’s extremely, excessively dangerous, but I like to play a role in what made that engine go that fast.”
