Public Relations Student Wins at Public Speaking Competition

Callie Crum, public relations major of Cardington, Ohio, is a student who understands what it means to be determined. Having been an active member of the Future Farmers of America (FFA) in high school, she had familiarized herself with all aspects of competitive public speaking, from tone inflection to choreographing hand movements and walking patterns. Upon her arrival to Ohio Northern University, she was not keen to let that interest die.

“I just have a drive to do it,” Crum says, “and I wanted to get back into competing.”

ONU Electrical and Computer Engineering Team Places Second in IEEE Competition

Three students majoring in electrical and computer engineering at Ohio Northern have won an award in the Region 2 IEEE Students Activity Conference in Youngstown State University for their senior design project titled “A Design of an Impact Monitor Device”.

The team of Thomas Fritz, of Middlefield, Ohio, Michael Sherry, of Defiance, Ohio, and John Weeman, of Wooster, Ohio, won second place in the paper defending competition. The students were awarded certificates and $500. The IEEE region 2 is composed of four geographical areas in the eastern U.S.

Engineering Students Awarded Scholarships

Five ONU engineering students were recently awarded scholarships by the Ohio Space Grant Consortium (OSGC). These scholarships are funded through the OSGC by NASA and are intended to encourage engineering students to enter the aerospace field.

Technological Studies Teams Garner Gold, Silver at National Robotics Challenge

Ohio Northern University's Department of Technological Studies teams garnered four awards, including a gold award, at the National Robotics Challenge in Marion, Ohio, on April 17-18.

ONU sent six teams and 21 students to the competition. The team of Rob Hradek, Wooster, Ohio; Scott Nemeth, Westlake, Ohio; Courtney Johnson, Fremont, Ohio; Katie Wade, Ijamsville, Md., Jose Guzman, Lima, Ohio; and Eric Gray, North Fairfield, Ohio, won a gold award in workcell animation for its ice cream serving machine. The team also won the people's choice award and a $500 prize.

ONU to Host Unite for Awareness Week

Ohio Northern University will host the fifth annual "Unite for Awareness Week," a student-driven initiative to bring attention to issues of discrimination, beginning on Monday, April 27.

On Monday, April 27, the topic is gender orientation. ONU Open Doors will present a documentary on the Rubi Girls, a group of professional drag queens who raise money for AIDS research, at 7 p.m. in the Dicke Forum. Jonathan McNeal, who made the documentary, will be on hand to discuss the film.

ONU to Host Multicultural Fair

"One World: Many Flavors," Ohio Northern University's Multicultural Fair, will be held in the McIntosh Activities Room on Monday, April 27, from 5-8 p.m.

The Ohio Northern University World Student Organization and the Office of Multicultural Development are sponsoring the event, which is free and open to the public.

NCPA and Phi Delta Chi Offer Community Health Screening

On March 28, 2009, Ohio Northern University’s student chapter of the National Community Pharmacists Association (NCPA), in conjunction with Phi Delta Chi pharmacy fraternity, provided ONU and the surrounding communities with an educational and informative health screening. Approximately 50 pharmacy students from all educational levels and several pharmacist faculty members participated in the various patient oriented services provided during this free health screening. During this screening, participating students gained a wealth of knowledge and experience.

ONU Model UN Team Travels to New York City

The ONU Model United Nations Team represented the country of Zimbabwe at the National Model United Nations Conference in New York City from April 7 until April 12.

ONU Students Studying in Cuba

Eight Ohio Northern University students are participating in an environmental management program at the University of Havana in Cuba.

Dr. Terry Maris , professor of management at ONU, accompanied the students and acts as the resident director of the program, which began March 7 and continues until May 17.
