ONU Students Compete in Idea Pitch Competition

Ohio Northern University's Collegiate Entrepreneurs Organization staged its fall 2009 Idea Pitch Competition on Oct. 28.

Callie Crum, a junior communication arts major from Cardington, Ohio, captured first place. She collected $200 for her first place idea, an Ohio Northern recycling work study program.

Student Bar Association Hosts Race Judicata

At 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 8, 33 law students, faculty members and families met in the rain for the return of the Student Bar Association's (SBA) annual Race Judicata at Ohio Northern University.

The race ran just over a mile and a half around the perimeter of the Green Monster and was open to all ages as well as pets.

Spielman Walk/Run Raises Funds

Speilman runMore than $3,500 for breast cancer research was raised in this year's Stefanie Spielman Walk/Run for Breast Cancer, held Oct. 10 as part of Homecoming Weekend.

The annual event, hosted by Ohio Northern's chapter of Kappa Epsilon and the Student Society of Health-System Pharmacists (SSHP), brought more than 190 participants to ONU's Green Monster on a chilly and foggy fall morning. The event is a 10-year tradition on campus.

ONU to Compete in IBM-sponsored Collegiate Programming Contest

Ohio Northern University engineering and computer science students will participate in the 34th annual IBM-sponsored Association for Computing Machinery International Collegiate Programming Contest (ACM-ICPC). ONU will send six students to the University of Cincinnati to participate in the regional competition on Oct. 31.

Tens of thousands of students from 83 countries and six continents will compete in regional competitions around the world. The top 100 teams from these regional contests will qualify to advance to the World Finals in Harbin, China, Feb. 1-5, 2010.

Public Relations Program Receive OCA Distinguished Program Award

Ohio Northern University's public relations program received the Distinguished Program Award at the 2009 Ohio Communication Association (OCA) Conference held in Columbus on Oct. 3, 2009. This prestigious award honors Ohio Northern as having one of the best public relations programs in the state.

The OCA bases this award on student success and the outstanding work of ONU's chapter of the national Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA). The Ohio Northern PRSSA chapter has won nearly every major award and scholarship offered by the organization.

Jason & deMarco to Perform

International recording artists Jason & deMarco are scheduled to perform in Ohio Northern University's English Chapel Sanctuary at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 25, 2009.

The concert is a promotional event for Unite for Awareness week and is sponsored by Open Doors, Lima PLFAG and the AIDS Resource Center.

Concrete Canoe Floats to Victory at National Competition

The Ohio Northern University concrete canoe team secured 13th place overall in the American Society of Civil Engineers’ 2009 national competition in Tuscaloosa, Ala., June 11-13. The team of 14 qualified for the national competition after winning first place overall at the regional competition at Lawrence Technological University in Southfield, Mich., in April. Competing teams traveled from across the United States and parts of Canada to the national event.

ONU Baja Team Ranks 17th at Regional Competition

Ohio Northern University’s Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Baja team placed 17th overall at the regional Baja SAE® competition held June 11-14. The team also took 9th in the endurance portion of the competition. 100 teams traveled from across the globe, including the United States, Canada, North Korea, El Salvador and Mexico to Burlington, Wis., for the event.

Public Relations Student Wins at Public Speaking Competition

Callie Crum, public relations major of Cardington, Ohio, is a student who understands what it means to be determined. Having been an active member of the Future Farmers of America (FFA) in high school, she had familiarized herself with all aspects of competitive public speaking, from tone inflection to choreographing hand movements and walking patterns. Upon her arrival to Ohio Northern University, she was not keen to let that interest die.

“I just have a drive to do it,” Crum says, “and I wanted to get back into competing.”
