Five Polar Bear teams to compete in NCAA Championships action this fall

ADA — The No. 5 Ohio Northern volleyball team, No. 19 Ohio Northern women's soccer team, the No. 32 Ohio Northern men's cross country team, the Ohio Northern women's cross country team and the Ohio Northern men's soccer team will all be competing in NCAA Division III Championships action this week.

The action will begin on Thursday when the men's soccer team hosts Brockport State (N.Y.) in a First Round NCAA Soccer Tournament contest at 1 pm at the ONU Soccer Field.

ADA — The No. 7 Ohio Northern volleyball team, No. 24 Ohio Northern women's soccer team and No. 25 Ohio Northern men's soccer team will all be competing in Ohio Athletic Conference Tournaments this week.

Men's Soccer player Ryan Smith receives NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship

ADA - Men's soccer senior Ryan Smith has been awarded one of the NCAA's Postgraduate Scholarships in recognition of his outstanding achievements as a scholar and a student-athlete.

Smith is a biology major who will be attending medical school upon graduation.

The NCAA awards up to 174 postgraduate scholarships annually, 87 for men and 87 for women.

ONU Men's, Women's teams looking for unprecedented third sweep of OAC All-Sports Trophies

Ohio Northern University is about to make history again.

For the past two years, ONU has swept the OAC Men's and Women's All-Sports Trophies, a feat that has not happened in OAC history.

Yet, it does not stop there.

Both the ONU Men and Women's teams are on their way to sweeping the titles or the third consecutive year. 

The only other team in history to have won both trophies win the same year was Mount Union during the 1990-91 school year.

Ohio Northern to dedicate Campoli Court during Dec. 20 game v JCU

ADA — Ohio Northern University will honor former head basketball coach Joe Campoli and his family on Saturday, Dec. 20, with the dedication of Joe and Margaret Campoli Court.

A new parquet-style floor was installed in the ONU Sports Center this fall to honor the legendary coach and his wife, Margaret, for their 30 years of service to Ohio Northern.

The floor will be dedicated at halftime of the Polar Bear men’s basketball game against John Carroll. Tip-off of the contest is slated for 3 pm.

Peggy Ewald to serve on Team USA Swim Team coaching staff at Paralympic Games in Beijing, China

ADA — Ohio Northern head swimming and diving coach Peggy Ewald will travel to Beijing, China, for the Paralympic Games Sept. 6-17 as a member of the US Paralympic Swimming Team coaching staff.

She has been a part of the Team USA Paralympic coaching staff since 2004 and has been the ONU swimming and diving coach since 2004, winning five OAC team titles, including four men’s crowns in succession.

Ewald was the head coach of Team USA at the ParaPanAm Games in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil in 2007.

Ron Beaschler is inducted into National Wrestling Coaches Association Hall of Fame

Ohio Northern wrestling coach Ron Beaschler was inducted into the National Wrestling Coaches Association Hall of Fame during the NWCA banquet on Thursday evening in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

The ceremony took place the evening before the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships got underway Friday and Saturday.

A McCutchensville, Ohio, native, Beaschler is the chairperson of the Human Performance and Sport Sciences department at ONU. He also is an assistant professor in the department and coordinates the sport management program at Ohio Northern.

Dec. 8, 2007, Estadio Olimpico Universitario on the campus of the University of Chihuahua, Chihuahua, MexicoThe United States ground game chewed up 7:37 on 16 plays over two fourth quarter scoring drives to outlast Mexico, 37-19, at the 2007 Aztec Bowl in Chihuahua, Mexico Saturday night at Estadio Olimpico Universitatio.

Team USA is now 10-1 against Mexico in the series.

Ohio Northern's Steve Gunter had one tackle while playing an outstanding cover game at corner back for Team USA.

Jason Trusnik signed to 53-man roster with New York Jets in ’07

Senior two-time All-American defensive end Jason Trusnik (Macedonia/Nordonia) was signed to the active, 53-man roster of the New York Jets of the National Football League.

Trusnik was signed to the 53-man roster on Nov. 16 and played in his first professional game against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Nov. 18.

Jimmy O'Brien - National Champion Spotlight

For the first three laps of the NCAA III National Indoor Championship 800-meter race, Jimmy O'Brien was in trouble.

Or so it appeared.

Seven other middle-distance stars trapped the Ohio Northern sophomore on the inside of Lane 1 at the Rose Holman Sports and Recreation Center's indoor track in Indiana on March 10.

With one lap to go O'Brien was stuck in fourth place with two competitors directly in front of him, an opponent on his right shoulder and four runners on his tail squeezing him into a box.
