Baseball team set to open 2010 schedule Feb. 27 at Myrtle Beach

ADA — The Ohio Northern baseball team will open its 2010 schedule Feb. 27-March 7 at Myrtle Beach, S.C., on its annual spring break trip.

The Polar Bears, under fifth-year head coach Justin Bergman, will open its home schedule March 20 with a twin-bill against Manchester (Ind.) at 1 pm at Wander Field.

Northern will also host Ohio State-Lima, Marietta, Baldwin-Wallace, Otterbein, Wilmington, Defiance and Mount Union in 2010.

Justin Miller named Second Team All-OAC for Baseball

ADA — Sophomore pitcher Justin Miller (Millersport/Liberty Union-Thurston) has been named Second Team All-Ohio Athletic Conference in baseball for the 2009 season.

Miller led the Polar Bears with a 4.08 ERA, 70 2/3 innings pitched, 77 strikeouts and a .239 opponent batting average, while recording the second most wins with a 5-4 overall record.

Otterbein takes both games of a doubleheader over Baseball 6-5 and 8-4 to wrap up conference play

ADA - The Ohio Northern baseball team dropped its final two games of the season in a doubleheader with Otterbein Sunday afternoon at Wander Field.

The Cardinals won Game 1 6-5 and won Game 2 8-4.

ADA - Senior Brian Hill pitched a complete game and freshman Matt Hampshire hit the game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the 7th of Game 1 to lift the Ohio Northern baseball team to a 6-5 victory before dropping Game 2 8-4 in 11 innings Saturday afternoon at Wander Field.

Baseball doubleheader with Otterbein moved to Sunday

ADA - The Ohio Northern baseball team's doubleheader with conference-foe Otterbein today has been rescheduled for 1 pm on Sunday.

Once again, the rain has forced the Polar Bears to postpone the contest.

If the bad weather holds off, Northern is scheduled to finish the season this weekend with a doubleheader tomorrow at 1 pm at home against Marietta before hosting the Cardinals on Sunday.

Baseball forced to cancel game with St. Francis (Ind.) due to rain

ADA - The Ohio Northern baseball team's game at St. Francis (Ind.) today has been canceled due to rain.

The game had initially been scheduled for Wednesday, April 22, but was postponed from then until today due to inclement weather.

With the cancellation of this game, the Polar Bears now have just two conference doubleheaders left on their 2009 schedule.

ADA - The Ohio Northern baseball team's Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader at Wander Field, scheduled for 1 pm Tuesday, has been postponed due to rain.

The games have been rescheduled for Friday at 1 pm at Wander Field.

The Polar Bears are 14-20 overall and are 3-11 in OAC action this season.

NEW CONCORD - Ohio Northern was not able to produce much offense as Muskingum pitchers Nathan VanMeter and Levi Shaw both pitched complete games to sweep the Polar Bears 4-0 and 4-2 on Saturday.

ADA - The Ohio Northern baseball team used a three-run second inning and a four-run third inning to defeat area-rival Bluffton 7-3 Thursday evening at Wander Field.

ONU is now 14-18 on the year, while the Beavers fall to 10-20.

Senior Brian Hill threw a complete game to pick up the win and improve to 5-5 on the season. Bluffton starter Jesse Brown took the loss and falls to 0-1.

Hoelzel goes 6-for-7 to help Baseball snap six-game skid in doubleheader against Manchester (Ind.)

NORTH MANCHESTER, Ind. - Sophomore Mike Hoelzel went 6-for-7 with a home run, a double, three runs scored and four RBIs to lead the Ohio Northern baseball team to a split with Manchester (Ind.) Wednesday evening at Gratz Field.

The Polar Bears won Game 2 12-0 to end a six-game losing streak after falling in Game 1 8-3.
