Wrestlers move to 3-2 on season with 22-16 non-conference victory at Mount Saint Joseph

CINCINNATI — The Ohio Northern wrestling team improved to 3-2 on the season with a 22-16 non-conference victory at Mount Saint Joseph Tuesday night at the Harrington Center.

The victory is the second of the season for the Polar Bears over the Lions (4-8), as ONU topped MSJ 24-11 at the Olivet Duals on Nov. 22.

With the score tied at 16-16, senior Drew Michel and sophomore Joe Fisher won at 197 and heavyweight, respectively, to put the match away for the Polar Bears.

OLIVET, Mich. --  The Ohio Northern wrestling team opened its 2008-09 season with a 2-2 record at the Olivet (Mich.) Duals Saturday afternoon.

The Polar Bears defeated Mount Saint Joseph 24-11 and Thiel (Pa.) 25-9 and fell to No. 8-ranked Wisconsin-Stevens Point 28-8 and Trine (Ind.) 26-16.

Joe Fisher, Luke Miller, Billy Painter, Jeff Penny and David Penny each posted 3-1 records on the day for Ohio Northern.

Ohio Northern Wrestlers picked third in OAC Preseason Coaches’ polls

ADA — The Ohio Northern wrestling team was picked to finish third in the 2008-09 Ohio Athletic Conference Coaches’ preseason polls on Wednesday.

The Polar Bears were picked third and received 27 points from the seven league coaches in both the Dual Meet and Championships polls.

The Dual Meet poll reflects the regular season, round-robin dual meet standings, while the Championships poll reflects the OAC Tournament predictions.

ADA — The Ohio Northern wrestling team will open its 2008-09 season Nov. 22 at the Olivet (Mich.) Comet Duals under 21st-year head coach Ron Beaschler.

The Polar Bears will also compete in a dual meet at Mount Saint Joseph on Dec. 2 before opening their home schedule Dec. 2 against Manchester (Ind.) at the ONU Sports Center.

Penny finishes in Sweet 16 at NCAA Division III Championships

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — Junior David Penny finished among the top 16 wrestlers in the 125-pound weight class with a 1-2 record Friday at the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships at U.S. Cellular Arena.

Penny (29-10) posted a 7-4 victory over Jerrod Hoxie of Heidelberg in the quarterfinals of the consolation bracket early Friday evening, but was was eliminated just one win shy of earning All-America honors with a 7-1 loss to No. 7 seeded Munkhbaatar Baatar of St. John's (Minn.) late Friday night in the consolation semifinals.

Against Hoxie, Penny got a takedown and a 3-point near fall in the first 30 seconds to take a very quick 5-0 lead and made it hold up.
