Wrestlers place three at Division II-dominated Midwest Classic

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — The Ohio Northern wrestling had a solid showing with three placers at the Midwest Classic Saturday and Sunday, at the University of Indianapolis.

The Polar Bears finished 14th out of 22 teams, which included 11 nationally ranked teams from Division II, III and NAIA.

Northern's 39 points were the most among the six NCAA Division III schools in attendance.

Sophomore Luke Miller named OAC Wrestler of the Week

ADA — Ohio Northern sophomore Luke Miller (Indiana, Pa./Indiana Area) was named the Ohio Athletic Conference Wrestler of the Week for the week of Dec. 15-21.

Miller led the Polar Bears at the Desert Duals at the Flamingo Hotel in Las Vegas, Nev. on Sunday with a 4-0 record on the day.

He improves to 14-2 on the season, with one pin and winning by decision three times at the 157-pound weight class.

LAS VEGAS, Nev. —  The Ohio Northern wrestling team defeated No. 11-ranked (NAIA) Embry-Riddle (Ariz.) 26-22 to finish 1-3 at the Desert Duals Sunday at the Flamingo Hotel.

The Polar Bears (5-5) fell to national power Wartburg (Iowa) 21-15, No. 2-ranked Coe (Iowa) 35-6 and No. 27-ranked Lakeland (Wis.) 27-16 on Sunday.

Sophomore Luke Miller and freshman Matt Alexander led ONU with a 4-0 records on the day.

ADA — Ohio Northern placed wrestlers in eight of the 10 weight classes to post a second place finish at the 28th annual ONU Invitational Saturday at the ONU Sports Center.

Northern finished with 111 points in the 19-team tournament.

Wrestling blanks Manchester (Ind.) 48-0 in home opener

ADA -- Ohio Northern got three pins and won all 10 weight classes to sweep Manchester (Ind.) 48-0 in the 2008-09 home opener Tuesday night at the ONU Sports Center.

The Polar Bears improve to 4-2, while the Spartans fall to 0-4.

Freshman Mick Letcher notched his first college fall in his first collegiate match when he pinned Torryn Heffelfinger in 2:06 at 149 pounds.
