Softball team moves up to No. 4 nationally in ninth weekly NFCA national poll

ADA —The Ohio Northern softball team jumped up two more spots to No. 4 in the ninth weekly Division III poll by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association.

The Polar Bears (35-3) were ranked No. 6 last week, were  No. 11 in week seven, were No. 12 in weeks 3-6 polls, were No. 14 in the second weekly poll and were No. 11 in the first weekly poll.

Northern garnered 157 points in voting conducted by eight NCAA Division III head coaches representing the eight NCAA regions after earning 155 points last week.

School-record nine Polar Bears named All-OAC in Softball for 2009; Decima named OAC Player of the Year

ADA — A school record nine Ohio Northern players were named First Team All-Ohio Athletic Conference in softball for 2009 in voting conducted by the league’s 10 head coaches.

Northern also set a school record with six Polar Bears being named the First Team, led by the Gayle Lauth Player of the Year Award winner junior Liz Decima (Freedom, Pa./Ambridge).

ADA — The No. 6-ranked Ohio Northern softball team received the top seed and a first-round bye in the Greencastle, Ind., Regional of the 2009 NCAA Division III Softball Tournament.

The 7-team Greencastle Regional will run from Thursday-Sunday and will be hosted by DePauw (Ind.) at the DePauw Softball Field.

ADA -- Sixth-ranked Ohio Northern won the 2009 Ohio Athletic Conference Softball Tournament with a 7-3 victory over Mount Union in Game 6 of the Sunday afternoon at the ONU Softball Field.

ADA --  No. 6-ranked Ohio Northern got three 2-out RBI hits to defeat John Carroll 4-1 in the semifinal of the 2009 Ohio Athletic Conference Softball Tournament Saturday afternoon at the ONU Softball Field.

The top-seeded Polar Bears (34-3) advance to the finals on Saturday at 1 pm.
