GREENCASTLE, Ind. — Sophomore Sam Bastian led four Ohio Northern players in double figures with a career-high 16 points as the Polar Bears defeated Defiance 70-67 in the first round of the DePauw (Ind.) Invitational Saturday night at Neal Fieldhouse.

Ohio Northern (3-0) advances to the Championship game Sunday at 4 pm against tournament host DePauw, who defeated Earlham (Ind.) 92-57 in the first semifinal game on Saturday.

ADA — Ohio Northern junior post Kyle Meyer (Columbus Grove) was named the Ohio Athletic Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for the week of Nov. 17-23.

Meyer led the Polar Bears to the Mount Saint Joseph Tournament championship and was named the tournament MVP.

He averaged 24.0 points per game and shot .60.0 percent from the floor in the two ONU victories.

Meyer scored 25 as Ohio Northern topped Spalding (Ky.) 72-69 in the first round and scored 23 Mount Saint Joseph 81-70 in the championship game.

CINCINNATI --  Junior Kyle Meyer scored 23 points and earned tournament MVP honors, leading the Ohio Northern men's basketball team to an 81-70 victory over Mount Saint Joseph in the championship game of the Mount Saint Joseph Invitational Saturday night at the Harrington Center.

The Polar Bears improve to 2-0, while the Lions fall to 2-1.

Meyer and junior Ezra Bradshaw were named to the All-Tournament team.

CINCINNATI -- Junior Kyle Meyer scored 25 points, leading the Ohio Northern men's basketball team to a season-opening 72-69 victory over Spalding (Ky.) in the first round of the Mount Saint Joseph Invitational Friday evening.

The Polar Bears (1-0) advance to Saturday's championship game at 7 pm against either Mount Saint Joseph or Lycoming (Pa.)

ADA — The Ohio Northern men’s basketball team was picked to finish second and the women’s basketball team was picked eighth in the 2008-09 Ohio Athletic Conference Coaches' preseason poll on Tuesday.

The Polar Bear men received 71 points and one first place vote in voting conducted by the league’s 10 head coaches.

Capital was picked to finish first for the men with 81 total points and nine first place votes, Wilmington was picked to finish third with 57 points and John Carroll was picked fourth with 54 points.

ADA — Former Ohio Northern basketball standout Chad Bostelman is returning to his alma mater to serve as head men’s golf coach and assistant men’s basketball coach.

Bostelman, a 2005 graduate, returns to the Polar Bears after one year as an assistant coach at Ohio Wesleyan and two seasons as a graduate assistant at Heidelberg.

ADA - The Ohio Northern men's basketball team will open its 2008-09 season Nov. 21-22 at the Mount Saint Joesph Tournament in Cincinnati.

The Polar Bears, under fourth-year head coach Jeff Coleman, will also play at the DePauw (Ind.) Tournament Nov. 29-30 and at the Surf N' Slam San Diego Tournament Dec. 27-28 at San Diego, Calif.

Northern will open its home schedule Dec. 10 with an Ohio Athletic Conference tilt with Heidelberg at 7:30 pm at the ONU Sports Center.
