Franklin (Ind.) sweeps ONU Baseball 5-1 and 6-3

FRANKLIN, IND. — Franklin (Ind.) completed a four-game weekend sweep of the Ohio Northern baseball team by winning a pair of games, 5-1 and 6-3, at John P. McDowell Field Sunday afternoon.

The Grizzlies improve to 7-5 on the season with the two wins and the Polar Bears drop to 4-7.

In game one, ONU freshman Chris Sobieray walked to lead off the game and later scored on sophomore Brett Katana’s RBI single to stake Northern to an early 1-0 lead. But that was all ONU could muster in game one as Franklin starter Jared Applegate (1-1) struck out 10 in the complete-game victory.

Franklin (Ind.) holds ONU bats in check, takes double header

FRANKLIN, IND. — Franklin (Ind.) pitching held the Ohio Northern baseball team to just seven hits in both games of a double header sweep Saturday afternoon at McDowell Field.

Franklin (5-5) won the first game 1-0, that featured a great pitching dual between ONU senior Mark Sankovich (2-1) and Franklin's Andy Clark (2-1).

The Grizzles scored nine unanswered runs in game two for a 9-2 victory.

ONU Baseball splits with MSOE (Wis.) behind Sankovich's gem

LEESBURG, Fla. — ONU senior Mark Sankovich threw complete a game shutout, allowing just one hit in a 4-0 victory in Game 1 of a double header split with Milwaukee School of Engineering (Wis.) Saturday afternoon at Lake Sumter CC.

The Raiders turned the tables on Northern in Game 2 and took an 8-1 victory. The split means ONU returns home from its spring trip with a 4-3 record. MSOE is now 2-2 on the season.

Hubbard's blast leads ONU Baseball to 7-4 win over St. Vincent (Pa.)

ORLANDO, Fla. — Sophomore Brandon Hubbard belted a three-run homer in the bottom of the third to jump start the Polar Bears to a 7-4 victory over St. Vincent (Pa.) Friday afternoon at Sanford Stadium in Orlando, Fla.

The wins ups the Polar Bear’s record to 3-2 on the season while the Bearcats fall to 4-3.

Senior lefthander Drew Wieland (2-0) made his second start of the season for ONU, going 6 1/3 innings, giving up four runs on seven hits and striking out five. Fellow senior Nick Simoff got the final two outs in relief of Kevin Sigg to pick up the save.

Rose-Hulman (Ind.) tops Polar Bears 8-1

ORLANDO, Fla. — Rose-Hulman (Ind.) scored three runs in the sixth and four in the eight to break open a tied game and take an 8-1 victory over Ohio Northern Wednesday afternoon.

The win improves the Engineers to 4-1 on the season while the Polar Bears fall to 2-2.

Offensively, sophomore leftfielder Loren Fleischman continued his hot start, going 2-for-4 with a pair of singles. Fleischman is now batting .533 (8-for-15) on the young season.

ONU Baseball sweeps a pair from Johnson & Wales (R.I.)

ORLANDO, Fla. — Ohio Northern scored four times in the bottom of the seventh to take Game 1 of a double-header sweep over Johnson & Wales (R.I.) Tuesday afternoon in Orlando, Fla.

The Polar Bears (2-1) cameback to win the first game 11-10 and used a strong pitching performance from senior Mark Sankovich to win game two, 5-1.

With the Polar Bears leading 2-1 in the first game, Johnson & Wales (1-3) used four hits and three Polar Bear errors to score nine times in the top of the fifth to take a commanding 10-2 lead.

Wieland strikes out 14 in Ohio Northern's season opener

WINTER PARK, Fla. — Senior left-hander Drew Wieland struck out a career-high 14 batters but the Ohio Northern baseball team let a late lead slip away as it fell to Emory & Henry (Va.) 10-9 Monday afternoon.

The Polar Bears (0-1) drop their season opener despite pounding out 16 hits and hitting .500 (8-for-16) with runners in scoring position. With the win, the Wasps improve to 3-4 on the season.
