AKRON — The women’s swimming and diving team extended its lead to 72 points at the Ohio Athletic Conference Championships, again in record-breaking fashion, on Day 2 of the three-day OAC Championships meet at the Ocasek Natatorium at the University of Akron on Friday.

Ohio Northern remains in first with 211 points with John Carroll still in second with 139 points.

The Polar Bears won the first four events on the night and five of the eight total to put themselves in position for their second OAC title in three years.

Northern caimed all five OAC event titles on Thursday night and has now won nine of the 13 events contested in the meet.

Junior Katherine Moore was a part of two record-breaking performances, including the 100 fly with time of 58.40 in the prelims, topping the OAC record of 59.49, ONU record of 59.14, and the NCAA B Cut of 58.79. Moore won the finals run in 58.84.

Moore was also part of the 200 medley relay team, combining with sophomores Cassandra Fennell and Hannah Bukowy and freshman Alison Garbash to break the school and conference record of 1:51.00, set by Bukowy, Moore, and Fennell in 2008, this time in 1:49.38.

The Polar Bear team of freshmen Michelle Eggers, Kaitlyn Early, Sarah Fiffick, and junior Jillian Huber also shattered the OAC record of 8:05.83 and school record of 7:57.28, dominating the 800 free relay in 7:55.71.

Eggers also added a win in the 200 free, finishing in 1:56.94. Fiffick earned All-Conference honors as well by finishing third in 1:58.64.

Junior Lacey Shumate also posted a victory in the 400 IM, touching first in 4:46.38.

Huber broke the school record of 1:01.59 in the 100 backstroke with her third place finish in 1:01.24, finishing only behind two swimmers who each surpassed the old OAC mark in the race.

Bukowy and Early added All-Conference accolades by finishing second and third in the 100 breast, with times of 1:08.01 and 1:08.68, respectively.

Junior diver Terri Lynn Shigle added All-Conference honors, finishing second in the 1-meter diving with a score of 375.80.

Ohio Northern looks to take home the OAC crown on Saturday with the prelims of the third and final day beginning at 11 am and final events starting at 6 pm.
