Women's Soccer wraps up home schedule with 2-0 victory over Wilmington

ADA - The Ohio Northern women’s soccer team wrapped up its regular season home schedule with a 2-0 victory over Wilmington on Wednesday at the ONU Soccer Field.
The Polar Bears move to 12-5-1 overall and 6-2 in the Ohio Athletic Conference while the Quakers fall to 13-5 overall and 6-2 in the OAC.
In the first half, senior Erin Stapp tapped in the ball off a cross from junior Kaitlin Sanders for her her ninth goal of the season and putting the Polar Bears ahead 1-0 just 2:16 into the match.
Northern took a 2-0 lead at intermission after Wilmington inadvertently scored an own goal at the 27:53 mark of the first stanza.
ONU played a strong defensive second half shutting out Wilmington to clinch the win.
Freshman goalie Kristen DeWees had two saves for the night allowing ONU their sixth shutout match.
The Polar Bears outshot the Quakers 18-10 and rallied seven corner kicks to their opponents three.
“This was a great win,” ONU head coach Mark Batman said. “It’s always nice to beat a team that’s ranked above you. It always helps build confidence as we head into tournaments.”
This win ties the Polar Bears for second place in OAC conference standings, trailing the leader Otterbein by only one point.
The Polar Bears will wrap up regular season play Saturday at 2 pm as they travel to Marietta.
