Steinbrunner leads Women's Cross Country at Brodt Invite

BOWLING GREEN - Ohio Northern's women's cross country team finished seventh out of 13 teams overall and second out of five among NCAA Division III teams at the Bowling Green Mel Brodt Invitational Saturday afternoon.

The Polar Bears (3-5) defeated six other teams, including NCAA Division I schools Marshall and Cleveland State and OAC rivals Wilmington and Heidelberg, with an overall score of 178 points. 

Winning the meet was Dayton with 19 points, while Bowling Green finished second with 69 points and Ashland was third with 80 points. 

In the Division III race, Baldwin-Wallace edged ONU 35-39 for the team title. Wilmington was third with 74, Manchester (Ind.) was fifth with 94 and Heidelberg was fifth with 145.

Finishing fourth out of 153 runners overall and first among 76 Division III runners was freshman Alison Steinbrunner in 18:35.

Steinbrunner’s time ties her for the second-best time in ONU history with Shelley Deiss, who also ran an 18:35 in 1992.

Placing 42nd overall and eighth in DIII was sophomore Mallory Bloom in 19:35, followed at 43rd (ninth DIII) by senior Rachel Smith in 19:36. 

Junior Amy Davis placed 49th (10th DIII) in 19:47 and sophomore Ashley Baumer was 50th (11th DIII) in a career-low 19:48.

The Polar Bears will run next on Saturday, September 19 at the Calvin College Select Meet in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
