ADA — Ohio Northern won its third straight home-opener Tuesday afternoon by defeating Wittenberg 1-0 at the ONU Soccer Field.
The Polar Bears improve to 3-2-1 overall on the season while the Tigers move to 0-4-1.
The game was scoreless until the 39:29 mark of the first half when sophomore Abrim Mueller crossed the ball into fellow sophomore Greg Stawicki who shot the ball and had it blocked.
Stawicki then followed his own rebound and hit the ball to the upper half of the net for the game’s first and only goal.
In the final minutes of the game, freshman Mac Church recorded two saves for the Polar Bears as part of his game-high four.
Church has now recorded a shutout in each of Ohio Northern's three victories on the season.
ONU outshot the Tigers 21-12 and took 11 corner kicks compared to Wittenberg’s two.
“It was a nice bounce back game for us,” said head coach Brent Ridenour. “Our defense was huge for us today and was the main reason that we won. We are now looking forward to the tournament here this weekend.”
Ohio Northern is hosting the OAC-MIAA Shootout this Friday and Saturday. The Polar Bears face Kalamazoo (Mich.) Friday at 3 pm.
