Softball runs record to 8-0 with blowout wins over Johnson & Wales, Northland

CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Ohio Northern softball team improved to 8-0 on its spring break trip with a pair of blowout victories over Johnson & Wales (RI) and Northland (Wis.) Friday afternoon at the National Training Center.

The Polar Bears defeated Johnson & Wales 17-1 in the opener and topped Northand 27-5 in the nightcap. Both games were called after five innings due to the NCAA;s 8-run rule.

Liz Decima led the Polar Bears, going 7-for-9 with 3 triples, a double, 8 RBI and 8 runs scored in the two games.

Against Johnson & Wales, ONU pounded out 17 hits and scored all 17 of its runs in the first three innings. ONU scored seven times in the second inning and scored eight runs in the third frame.

Lauren Hurd struck out eight in five innings of work to improve to 3-0 on the season.

Against Northland, Northern's offensive onslaught continued with a 10-run first inning and a 25-hit barrage.

Tina mangola went 5 for 6 with 5 RBI and 4 runs scored in the game and Katie Salay was 4 for 5 with 4 RBI and 2 runs scored.

The Polar Bears will wrap up their spring break trip on Saturday with a 9:30 am game against the College of New Jesey and an 11:30 am game against Manhattanville (N.Y.) at the National Training Complex.
