ADA - The Ohio Northern men’s soccer team had seven different players score as it defeated Kalamazoo (Mich.) 7-0 Friday afternoon in the OAC-MIAA Shootout at the ONU Soccer Field.

The Polar Bears better their record to 4-2-1 overall while the Hornets fall to 0-3 overall on the season.

At the 11:31 mark in the first half, junior Dan Otanicar threw the ball into the middle of the box where sophomore Dustin Connor headed the ball on to Cameron Johnson who proceeded to score for his first career goal to give ONU a 1-0 lead.

At the 36:55 mark, freshman Chris Matejka took the ball down the left touch line and passed it on to sophomore Robert Sellers who went to the corner and turned along the end line and shot it into the upper corner of the net for a 2-0 Ohio Northern lead and his first career goal as well.

In the second half, Abrim Mueller wasted little time scoring his first goal of the season as he gathered a loose ball and hit a rocket from about 30 yards out into the upper corner of the goal at the 45:46 mark.

After a goal keeper Mac Church’s punt, Otanicar one touched a pass to sophomore Christian Huelsman who beat the goal keeper high for his fourth goal of the season at the 51:19 mark to give the Polar Bears a 4-0 advantage.

At the 63:55 mark, Huelsman beat the goalkeeper outside of the penalty area, dribbled into the box and took a shot. His shot went off one defender and was put into the goal by another Hornets’ defender for an own goal.

Senior Jimmy Matuszak was the fourth player on the afternoon to get his first goal of the season as he received a Mueller free kick and headed it into the goal past the goalkeeper at the 72:29 mark for a 6-0 lead.

The final goal of the game came from sophomore Greg Stawicki who beat his defender and then the goalkeeper at the 80:26 mark for his second goal in as many games.

Church recorded his fourth shutout on the season while making a game-high seven saves.

“I am really happy how we started the first half,” ONU head coach Brent Ridenour said. “I was pleased with our team defense. It was a good start to the weekend and we look forward to continue it tomorrow against Trine.”

In the other OAC-MIAA Shootout contest, John Carroll defeated Trine, with both goals coming in the second half.

The Polar Bears play Trine (Ind.) tomorrow in the OAC-MIAA Shootout at 2:30 pm at the ONU Soccer Field, while John Carroll and Kalamazoo will play at 12:30 pm.
