MARIETTA - Senior Adam Ross scored two goals as the Ohio Northern men's soccer team defeated Marietta 3-0 and secured a spot in the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament Friday afternoon at Marietta Field.
The Polar Bears are now 14-5-1 and 5-3-1 in the OAC while the Pioneers fall to 9-5-3, 4-3-1.
Jimmy Matuszak got Northern on the board first at 9:26 with his third goal of the season.
Nate Bascom had a header saved on a pass from Cory Dobkins before Matuszak controlled the rebound and beat the goalkeeper and give Northern a 1-0 lead.
The second yellow card for a Marietta player at 25:20 allowed Ohio Northern to play with a man advantage for the duration of the game.
Both of Ross' goals came in the second half to give Northern the 3-0 win.
Ross took a pass from Chaz McCullah from midfield at 72:05 and only needed one touch to put the ball over the head of the Marietta keeper who had come to the top of the box.
Just three minutes later, Ross was fouled in the box and capitalized on the penalty kick for his seventh score of the year.
Aaron Collins recorded his 10th shutout of the season, making five saves in the process.
Ohio Northern will host the first round of the OAC Tournament on Monday at 2 pm.
