DELAWARE - Senior Kristin Reininger scored a goal on a 40-yard free kick in the 82nd minute to put the Ohio Northern women's soccer team up 2-1, as the Polar Bears defeated Ohio Wesleyan 3-1 in an extremely physical game Tuesday evening.
Ohio Northern improves to 3-0-1 on the season, while the Battling Bishops are now 3-2.
After starting every game of her career, Reininger's game winning goal was the first goal of her career.
Just 33 seconds later, senior Erin Stapp centered the ball from the right side of the box to freshman Katie Kinkelaar who calmly knocked in her fifth goal of the season to add to the Polar Bear lead.
Sophomore Chelsea Albert put Northern on the board first after heading in a goal from a corner kick from junior Kaitlin Sanders.
Northern's defense stymied the Bishops for almost all of the game. OWU's lone goal came in the 78th minute off a corner kick that was headed in by Jenny Howe.
Early on, junior Angie Pisut kept the pressure on the Bishop defense with two shots on goal within minutes of each other.
ONU outshot OWU 19-1 and had three corner kicks compared to just two for the Bishops.
Freshman goalkeeper Kristen Dewees pitched a shutout in the first half, while sophomore Lauren Roberts allowed just one goal and made three saves in the second half.
Ohio Northern will travel to Michigan this weekend to play at Hope (Mich.) on Friday and Calvin (Mich.) on Saturday.
