Polar Bears have record-setting efforts on Day 2 of Wooster Invitational

WOOSTER -- The Ohio Northern men's swimming and diving team surpassed two NCAA "B" cuts and set a school record ina third event on s=the second day of the three-day, Wooster Invitational on Friday.

The Polar Bears are in thirdplace in the 11-team meet with 828.5 points after 13 of 21 events. Wooster leads the team standings with 911 points, Westminster (Pa.) is second with 834points and Case Western Reserve is fourth with 733.5 points.

Michael Schultz had another outstanding day, surpassing the NCAA "B" cut in the 200 free, winning the event in 1:41.55.

He also combined with Ryan Bender, Anders Samuelson and Brett Kuhn to win the 800 free relay in a school-record time of 7:00.76, which is just three seconds off the NCAA "B" cut in that event.

Schuktz has now hit the "B" cut in the 500 and 200 free style events. Last year, he competed in those two events and the 1650 free at the NCAA Championships.

George Chesney als surpassed the NCAA "B" cut in winning the 3-meter diving, marking the third time this season that he has accomplished the feat.

Northern dominated the 200 free, with Schultz winning in his "B" cut time, Kuhn finishing second in 1:44.90 and Bender finishing seventh in 1:47.34.

Nick Swint and Casey Davis had outstanding efforts in the 400 I.M., as Swint was fourth in 4:26.05 Davis was fifth in 4:26.52.

In the 100 breast, Ryan Oberst finished seventh in 1:00.83, Jeb Deal was eighth in 1:01.39 and Andy Garlock was 13th in 1:02.16.

Joey Bechtel was seventh in the 100 back in :55.03 and Garrett Dauch was 11th in the event in :55.84.

In the 100 fly, Samuelson was 11th in :54.30 and Bill Neidinger was 16th in :55.36.

"We are swimming well with only 10 weeks of training under our belt and learning what needs to be done in the next half of our training," ONU head coach Peggy Ewald said. "It's exciting to see the potential of this team begin to realize what they are capable of and seeing the desire to work for it"

The Polar Bears will compete in the third and final day of the Invitational on Saturday.
