ADA - Calvin's Scott Hooker scored the only goal of the game on a penalty kick following an Ohio Northern foul in the box in the 47th minute to lead the Knights past the Ohio Northern men's soccer team 1-0 at the ONU Soccer Field Saturday afternoon on Day 2 of the OAC-MIAA Shootout.

Ohio Northern falls to 7-2 on the year, and the Knights improve to 3-3.

Ohio Athletic Conference-rival Baldwin-Wallace won the event by going 2-0 with a 1-0 victory Saturday against Albion (Mich.).

The Polar Bears seemed to have control of the match throughout its entirety, outshooting the Knights 22-8, 12 of which were on goal.

Besides the penalty shot, Calvin did not have a shot on goal until the 87:12 mark of the second half.

ONU had many chances within a 16 minute span in the first half.

Senior Ben Jackson began the pressure when he nearly scored off of a free kick by fellow senior Colin Schroeder.

Sophomore Chaz McCullah had a shot saved before senior Ryan Smith sent another free kick into the box at the 16:15 mark that was kicked around a bit before being cleared by the Knights.

Freshman Christian Huelsman had the next opportunity at 20:23 when he had a break away down the left side but missed the shot wide.

Three minutes later senior Adam Ross sent a nice cross from the right side to McCullah but Calvin goalkeeper Darrin Cline made one of his many great saves.

Northern's last serious threat of the half at 29:45 was when freshman Nate Bascom had a shot blocked that went to Huelsman who again missed wide left.

After giving up the goal early in the second half, ONU kept attacking with many close calls once again.

Schroeder had a free kick from about 40 yards out that seemed to be bending into the top left corner of the goal before Cline punched it away.

Sophomore Chet Gapczynski fired a shot from the left side of the goal in the 68th minute that was saved by a diving Calvin defender that headed the ball over the goal.

At the 82:18 mark, Northern had another golden opportunity turned away by a diving Cline when Huelsman dropped the ball back to Ross who laced the ball towards the goal.

Cline finished the match with 11 saves.

Northern will again be in action when it travels to Ohio Wesleyan on Wednesday at 7:30 pm.
