No. 10 Volleyball remains undefeated in OAC with convincing three-set sweep over Mount Union

ADA - Senior All-American setter Katie Weininger became the fourth player in Ohio Northern history to join the 4,000-Assist Club, while Liz Schnelle and Samantha Markham dominated from the middle hitter positions to lead the Polar Bears to a 3-0 victory over Mount Union in front of a raucous home crowd Friday evening at the ONU Sports Center.

The Polar Bears remain perfect in Ohio Athletic Conference play, improving their record to 17-4 overall and 3-0 in the OAC. MUC is now 17-7, 3-2.

Weininger had an impressive 43 assists in just three sets, giving her 4,023 for her career. She also had seven kills and seven digs to add to her nice all-around match.

Markham played her best offensive match of the year with a season-high 13 kills and an impressive .600 hitting percentage (13-1-20).

Schnelle had a very solid match, recording a match-high 14 kills and three total blocks.

The two teams played a very equal first set, as Mount Union had a 20-18 lead after an Ohio Northern service error.

A kill by sophomore Abby Schaller to earn the serve for Northern set up three consecutive aces by junior Renee Berry to give ONU a 22-20 lead and eventual 25-23 victory.

ONU used the momentum at the end of Set 1 to control the entire second set and win 25-12.

Northern won the third and final set 25-20, while taking the lead for good at 9-8 after a Mount Union hitting error.

Schaller played well with nine kills and a .364 hitting percentage, while Berry had a season-high four aces and added seven kills.

Berry and freshman Nicole Howard and Kasey Roeser each had 11 digs on the match.

As a team, the Polar Bears hit .310 while holding the Purple Raiders to just .164.

Ohio Northern will be in action again tomorrow to host Marietta at 1 pm.
