Mount Union downs Ohio Northern 5-1 in championship match of OAC Men's Tennis Tournament

MASON -- Top-seeded Mount Union defeated second-seeded Ohio Northern 5-1 in the championship match of the 2009 Ohio Athletic Conference Men's Tennis Tournament Saturday morning at the Lindner Tennis Center.

The Purple Raiders 20-4 earn the OAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament, which will begin next week.

The Polar Bears (14-5) saw their streak of two consecutive OAC Tournament titles come to an end.

Northern took a 1-0 lead when Ryan Paul and Nick Kowalczyk defeated  Zach Perry and Grant Aronson 8-5 at No. 1 doubles.

MUC grabbed a 2-1 lead after doubles play by winning at Nos. 3 and 2 doubles.

First, Brian Widdoes and Alex Kearney topped Jay Vaidya anbd Matt Dutro 8-5 at No. 3 and then Brian Mogus and Travis papay downed Chris Dohner and Jeff Carter 9-8(4) at No. 2 doubles.

The Raiders then won three singles matches to close out the contest.

First, Widdoes downed Dohner 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3 singles and Kearney topped Andrew Korba 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2 singles to make it 4-1 MUC.

The Raiders then won the match when Papay defeated Vaidya 6-2, 6-2 at No. 5 singles.
