Moore, Bukowy win twice each as Women's Swimming defeats John Carroll in 2009-10 season opener

ADA — The Ohio Northern women’s swimming and diving team defeated John Carroll 169-129 to start the ‘09-’10 season on Saturday afternoon the ONU Sports Center.

Ohio Northern improves to 1-0 overall (1-0 OAC), while the Blue Streaks are now 1-1 overall (1-1 OAC).

The Polar Bears were led by senior Katherine Moore and junior Hannah Bukowy, each winning two individual races.

Moore was victorious in both the 100 and 200 fly. She finished the 100 in 1:02.04 and the 200 in 2:19.07.

Bukowy led the way in the 100 and 200 breast with times of 1:10.64 and 2:35.67, respectively.

Senior Terri Lynn Shigle won both the 1- and 3-meter diving events. Shigle posted a score of 243.95 in the 1-meter and 216.95 in the 3-meter.

Also with wins for Ohio Northern were sophomores Alison Garbash and Kaitlyn Early.

Garbash touched first in the 50 free with a time of 25.38.

Early edged out a close victory in the 500 free. Her time of 5:28.23 gave her the win by just .42 seconds.

The Polar Bears also won every relay of the day. Bukowy, Moore, and Garbash combined with junior Cassandra Fennell to win the 200 medley in 1:53.34.

Moore, Garbash, Fennell, and freshman Mackenzie Hoffman topped the 200 free relay in 1:43.02.

“The women really stepped up today,” head coach Peggy Ewald added. “We were down a few swimmers and the whole team competed. It is exciting to start out the year with a home win, and we are very pleased with our performance.”

The Polar Bears will return to action when they travel to Wilmington on Friday at 6 pm in their second OAC meet of the year.
