By Tim Glon
ADA — Ohio Northern junior Michael Schultz (New Berlin, Wis./Martin Luther) was named the Ohio Athletic Conference Men's Swimmer of the Week for the week of Nov. 30-Dec. 6.
Schultz led the Polar Bears to a second place finish at the 10-team Wooster Invitational Thursday-Saturday last week.
He won the 200, 500 and 1650 freestyle events and was part of ONU’s winning 800 free relay squad.
Schultz surpassed the NCAA “B” Cut in the 500 free (4:34.18) and the 1650 free (16:01.92) and currently ranks third nationally in both events.
He also won the 200 free in 1:42.98, just missing the NCAA qualifying standard by .13 of a second.
Schultz combined with sophomore Ryan Bender (Dayton/Centrerville), sophomore Anders Samuelson (Urbana/Springfield Catholic Central) and freshman Brannan Schloendorn (Westlake/St. Ignatius) to win the 800 free relay in 7:01.92.
This marks the first time this season and the fourth time in his career that Schultz has won the award.
ONU will return to action during the Christmas break by traveling to Deerfield Beach, Fla., to begin training for the 2010 portion of the schedule, which kicks off Jan. 15 with a tri-meet at Kenyon with Oberlin.
