Meyer scores career-high 37, Goering hits game winner in 100-99 double overtime win for Men's Basketball

ALLIANCE – Kyle Meyer poured in a career-high 37 points to help lead the Ohio Northern men’s basketball team past Mount Union 100-99 in double overtime Saturday afternoon to finish out both team’s regular seasons.

The Polar Bears improve to 17-8 overall and 12-6 in the Ohio Athletic Conference while the Purple Raiders fall to 12-13 overall and 6-12 in the OAC.

Mount Union opened the game on a 13-2 run as Chris Switzer hit a 3-point shot with 15:16 remaining in the first half.

Ohio Northern would go then go on a run to tie the game at 24-24 with 5:18 left in the first half when Sean Whitney hit a jump shot.

With 1:49 remaining in the half, Sam Bastian made a lay up to give ONU its first lead of the game at 30-29.

Bastian later fouled Purple Raider Sam King, who went to the line and knocked in two free throws with three seconds remaining to give MU a 34-30 advantage at intermission.

MU held a 43-35 lead with 16:24 remaining in the second half when Luke Conley hit a 3-pointer off an assist from King.

Freshman Scott Schnelle gave ONU the lead again at 51-49 with 10:18 remaining as he converted a pair of free throws.

With nine seconds remaining in the second half, Switzer laid in a basket to tie the game and then hit a free throw to complete the 3-point play to give MU a 77-76 lead.

Purple Raider Dave Pellerite fouled Meyer with seven seconds left, which led to Meyer hitting the latter of two free throws to tie the game at 77-77 which proved to be the final points of the second half.

With 2:11 remaining in overtime, Meyer hit a jump shot and free throw to give ONU an 86-82 lead.

Conley would later steal the ball from Whitney and passed it ahead to Jay Mathis who finished off the fast break by dunking the ball with 57 seconds left to tie the game at 86-86.

Polar Bear senior Kurtis Brown missed a trey at the buzzer to send the game into its second overtime.

With 2:44 remaining in the second overtime, the game seemed all but over when Switzer hit a 3-point shot off a King assist to give MU a 97-89 lead.

Ohio Northern then went on an amazing run to get back into the game as Brown nailed a trey with 1:05 remaining to cut the MU lead to 99-97.

Following a Switzer missed trey with seven seconds left, freshman Gene Goering hauled in the rebound and then let loose a 3-pointer with three seconds remaining and drained it to give the Polar Bears the 100-99 win.

Brown finished the game with 20 points while Bastian and Ezra Bradshaw each added 11 points for ONU.

Switzer scored a team-high 27 points while Pellerite added 25 points and a game-high seven rebounds for MU.

Conley also had 22 points and a game-high six assists for the Purple Raiders.

The Polar Bears will be the number three-seed Wednesday evening at they host Marietta at 7:30 pm in the OAC Tournament at the ONU Sports Center.
