Merrick scores second career goal as WSoccer falls to #25 Denison 2-1

GRANVILLE ­­— Freshman Alyssa Merrick scored unassisted for her second career goal against No. 25-ranked Denison as the Ohio Northern women’s soccer team fell 2-1 on Wednesday evening.

The Lady Polar Bears record falls to 4-3-1 as the Big Red improve to 5-2-1 for the season.

After a scoreless first half, Anna Rusch put Denison on the board off a cross from Julie Dean as the Big Red took the lead 1-0.

Minutes later Maggie Hoskin followed her teammate to score the winning goal off an assist from Kate Henderson, putting the Big Red ahead 2-0.

Merrick scored with only five minutes remaining in the match, gaining control and scoring from 25 yards out after the Denison defenders failed to clear the ball.

The Lady Polar Bears were outshot 18-8 and Denison goalkeeper Courtney Cobb made five saves, resulting in the win.

The Polar Bears will return home this Saturday at 2 pm against Case Western Reserve.
