Men's Tennis team draws even in OAC action with 9-0 victory over Muskingum

ADA – The Ohio Northern men’s tennis team shut out Muskingum 9-0 Tuesday afternoon at University Courts for its first Ohio Athletic Conference win of the season.

The Polar Bears better their record to 3-4 overall and 1-1 in the OAC, while the Muskies move to 0-7 overall and 0-2 in the conference.

Senior Ryan Paul and freshman Nick Kowalczyk started the match off with a number one doubles victory over Jayson Hilborn and Adrian Mathews 8-4.

Chris Dohner and Jeff Carter followed that with an 8-5 number two doubles win over Shivtaj Singh and Malcolm Reed.

In number three doubles play, Jay Vaidya and Matt Dutro defeated Seth Holdsworth and Kyle Vallejo 8-1 to give Ohio Northern a 3-0 lead heading into singles play.

Paul earned his second win of the afternoon by winning number one singles 6-2, 6-1 over Jayson Hilborn.

Kowalczyk had the shortest victory of the day as he won 6-0 at number two singles due to Singh retiring after the first set.

In number three singles action, Dohner won 6-2, 6-0 against Colin Streb.

Carter had the most dominant victory in the match as he defeated Mathews 6-0, 6-0 at number four singles.

Freshman Andrew Korba bettered his record to singles record to 3-1 on the season as he picked up a win in number five singles play 6-3, 6-1 against Reed.

Senior Vaidya finished the day for the Polar Bears as he won 7-6 (7-2), 6-1 over Vallejo.

“A win always feels good,” ONU head coach Bob Rohan said. “It’s early in the season and I’m already seeing the work from practice translate into the matches. This is the starting point and it doesn’t end here.”

Ohio Northern resumes play on Thursday as it hosts non-conference opponent Wooster at 4 pm.
