Men's Tennis shuts out Marietta 9-0 on Senior Day

ADA – On Senior Day, the Ohio Northern men’s tennis team ended its regular season with a 9-0 victory over Marietta at University Courts Saturday afternoon.

The Polar Bears better their record to 12-5 overall and 7-2 in the Ohio Athletic Conference while the Pioneers move to 1-10 overall and 0-8 in the conference.

Four players for ONU shut out their opponent 6-0, 6-0 in singles play as well.

The first of those four was senior Ryan Paul who defeated Bruce Kitchens in number one singles play.

In number two singles, freshman Nick Kowalczyk won 6-1, 6-0 over Mike Carpenter.

The second singles shut out came in the number three match up when sophomore Jeff Carter defeated Ryan Whitnable.

Senior Jay Vaidya shut out Bruno De Faria in number four singles.

In number five singles action, freshman Andrew Korba pulled out a 7-5, 6-3 win against Sam Vincent.

Kyle Barnaba won his number six singles match over Dave Koscielny with the fourth shut out for ONU in singles play.

In number one doubles, Paul and Korba picked up an 8-2 win over Kitchens and Carpenter.

The only doubles shut out of the day occurred when Kowalczyk and Vaidya defeated Whitnable and Zohare Khan in number two doubles.

Carter and freshman Matt Dutro won 8-1 in number three doubles by defeating Koscielny and De Faria.

“I don’t think of today as much of a Senior Day without Chris (Dohner),” Paul said. “Today was just another match because we will be back here on Tuesday for the tournament.”

Senior Chris Dohner was not able to play Saturday due to an academic commitment.

“This is my favorite time of the year and I will miss my friends,” Vaidya said, “ but this is not our final match and we have to keep our mind in it and stay focused.”

Ohio Northern will be back in action on Tuesday, as it will be hosting an OAC Quarterfinals match at 3:30 pm.

Due to Dohner not being in attendance, the Polar Bears will be celebrating Senior Day again on Tuesday.
