ADA — The Ohio Northern men’s soccer team will be making its second NCAA Division III Tournament appearance in the last three seasons, opening up against host No. 17 Wheaton (Ill.) on Friday.

With a win over Wheaton, the Polar Bears will then face either Wittenberg or Carroll (Wisc.) on Saturday.

Northern made its only other appearance to the NCAA Tournament in 2006 after winning both the Ohio Athletic Conference Regular Season and Tournament Championships.

That year, Ohio Northern won its first ever NCAA Tournament game over Transylvania (Ky.) 2-0 before falling to Ohio Wesleyan 1-0 in the following round.

The Polar Bears made their way to the tournament by winning three straight in OAC Tournament play and earning the conference’s automatic bid.

Northern started off as the No. 3-seed and beat No. 6-seed Muskingum 3-0 to advance to the OAC Semifinals.

ONU then upset No. 2-seed John Carrol with a huge 5-1 victory on the road before defeating No. 4-seed Marietta at home on Saturday 3-0 and claiming the championship.
