GRANVILLE - Newly crowned Ohio Athletic Conference Player of the Year Kaitlyn Macdonald won both her matches, but the Ohio Northern women's tennis team lost to SUNY-Geneseo 5-3 in the First Round of the NCAA Division III Tournament Thursday afternoon at the Denison Tennis Courts.
The Polar Bears finish their season 20-6, while the Knights are now 11-0.
Geneseo advances on to play No. 9 Denison tomorrow at 2 pm.
Today marked the first NCAA Tournament match in school history for the Polar Bears.
Ohio Northern got off to a nice start in doubles competition, taking a 2-1 lead after the first three courts were finished.
Macdonald teamed with fellow senior Bridget Larson at No. 2 doubles to defeat Lauren Johnson and and Melissa Baker 8-4.
Sophomores Jacqueline Sammon and Liz Bajusz also picked up a convincing victory at No. 1 doubles by beating Vivian Cheung and Julia Passik 8-2.
The Knights' loan doubles win came at No. 3 doubles when Anna Lehet and Katie Gayvert edged Katie Gibbs and Jacki Hillis 8-6.
Macdonald then went on to take care of Cheung at No. 1 singles very quickly 6-1, 6-1 to give ONU a nice 3-1 advantage with five courts remaining.
However, Geneseo swept the next four courts to claim the 5-3 victory.
The two teams began play outside before rain forced the last four matches to be pushed to a nearby indoor facility on Denison's campus.
