It has been a record breaking year in doubles for the Ohio Northern women’s tennis team. Katie Macdonald and Bridget Larson are now first and second on the all-time doubles victories list. Both surpassed the previous record of 71 wins held by Melanie Oleski (2003-07) and Karen Lee (2002-05).

The two girls are in a unique situation in that they are each others partners. They have been partners for two years, and this consistency has helped with their success. “It’s always better to stay with the same partner,” said Macdonald. “You learn how each person operates.” By being partners, there is less competition between the two. “If I had to be second to anyone I guess its better that it’s my partner,” said Larson.

The new record holders were excited about their achievement. “It’s cool to leave something behind,” said Macdonald, “I have lots of memories from those doubles wins.” The girls earned most of their doubles wins together. “It gives us a great sense of accomplishment,” added Larson.

Both girls contribute a big part of their success to head coach Scot Wills. “He helped me grow into the player I wanted to become,” said Larson. Wills stressed the mental aspect of tennis. “I learned how to think on the court,” said Macdonald.

Macdonald and Larson have both gathered up many accomplishments during their four seasons of tennis. Macdonald has earned First Team All-OAC honors three times. She has also been the OAC Player of the Week three times. Larson earned Second Team All-OAC honors once and First Team All-OAC twice. She also was OAC Player of the Week. Both girls have earned Academic All-OAC accolades.

This is the last season for both girls. When asked what they would miss the most, they both reflected on their teammates. “I will miss the team atmosphere. I’ve had such a positive experience with these girls,” said Macdonald. Larson echoed this sentiment by saying, “The relationships you form are unique. We are a small team and you can learn from everyone.”

Northern’s tennis team has won the OAC regular season title for 2009. The OAC tournament is on Wednesday and the undefeated Polar Bears are looking to win. By winning the OAC tournament, the team would receive an automatic bid to the regional tournament. This has never happened for the women’s team in school history.
