Kretz and Metzker record top ten finishes, lead Men's Golf to second place at Defiance Spring Invitational

DEFIANCE - Senior Ben Kretz fired back-to-back 74's for a 148 and sophomore Joel Metzker went 77-80=157 to lead the Ohio Northern men's golf team to a second-place finish at the two-day Defiance Spring Invitational held at the par-71 6,137-yard Kettenring Country Club.

The Polar Bears lost only to Heidelberg, which shot 303-311=614 to win the tournament.

Ohio Northern went 312-316=628 in the eight-team tournament and is now 29-47 on the season.

This marks Kretz's third top-five finish of the season and Metzker's fourth top-ten finish on the year.

Metzker's Round 1 77 both of Kretz's 74's were each golfer's second lowest score this season.

Sophomore Phil Makowski finished tied for 16th with an 81-80=161 and sophomore Tom Repikcy finished one stroke behind (80-82=162) to finish in a tie for 20th.

Playing for the ONU 'B' team, junior Paul Morbitzer fired two sub-80 rounds with a 77-76=153. He finished in a tie for fifth place.

Morbitzer's Round 1 77 was a season low before breaking that in Round 2 with a 76.

The Polar Bears will return to action next Saturday and Sunday at the OAC Invitational hosted by Muskingum.
