Kate Witte wins 500th career match as No. 5 Volleyball sweeps Wittenberg Border Battle

SPRINGFIELD — Ohio Northern head volleyball coach Kate Witte notched the 500th victory of her career as the No. 5 Polar Bears swept No. 8-ranked Hope (Mich.) and Edison Community College on Saturday.
The Polar Bears (13-1) won the Wittenberg Border Battle with a perfect 4-0 record, defeating Alma (Mich.) 5-12, 25-22, 25-27, 25-16 and No. 10-ranked Calvin (Mich.) 25-20, 25-22, 21-25, 25-22 on Friday and No. 8 Hope (Mich.) 25-15, 25-23, 30-28 and Edison 25-11, 25-12, 25-19on Saturday.
It was the victory over No. 8 Hope that gave Witte her 500th career victory. In 19 seasons as Ohio Northern, Witte's teams have compiled an impressive 501-153 record, a winning percentage of .766.
Liz Schnelle, Kasey Roeser and Renee Berry were named to the All-Tournament team.
Against Hope, Schnelle had 18 kills and Kelsie Zumberger dished out 40 assists for the Polar Bears.
In the match with Edison, Schnelle had a team-best 14 kills as Ohio Northern played all 18 players in the match.
Fot the weekend, Schnelle had 68 kills, eight blocks and hit .445, Berry had 21 kills, 17 assists, four aces and 52 digs and Abby Schaller had 32 kills, six aces.
The Polar Bears will return to action Thursday night when they play host to No. 12-ranked Wittenberg at 7 pm at the ONU Sports Center.
