Jay Vaidya leads Ohio Northern on at Wabash Tournament

CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. — Junior Jay Vaidya placed third at No. 6 singles as Ohio Northern placed seventh as a team at the Kerry Seward Memorial Tournament hosted by Wabash College Saturday and Sunday.

Vaidya defeated Clinton Colliver of Transylvania (Ky.) 6-3, 7-5 and lost to Dawson Shaver of Coe (Iowa) 6-3, 6-3 in No. 6 singles on the first day of the tournament. He defeated Ben Voorhorst of Hanover (Ind.) 6-3, 6-4 for third place on Sunday.

Senior Kyle Webb got off to a rough start falling to Charles Hodge of Vincinnes (Ind.) 6-1, 6-2 in the first round at No. 5 singles. Webb bounced back rallying for a 6-1, 6-4 win over Aaron Williams of Hanover to reach the fourth place match on Sunday. Webb defeated Andy Schwenke of Carthage (Wis.) 6-3, 6-4 to fourth.

Scott finished fifth at No. 1 singles after topping Joey Lankelma of Coe 6-3, 6-2 in the first round but fell to Will Pelak of Wabash (Ind.) 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 in the semifinals. Scott faced Miguel Yates of Carthage Sunday, losing 6-4, 6-4.

In the No. 2 singles bracket, Schenck topped Jon Vandenberg of Albion (Mich.) 6-3, 6-1 and fell to Jaime Esteban of Vincinnes 6-2, 6-0 in the semifinals. Schenck was scheduled to play Lee Gammon of Transylvania on Sunday for third place, but lost by default to finish fifth.

In doubles action, Vaidya and senior Thomas Major went 2-1 at No. 3 doubles to finish third. The duo topped Dalton Main and Colliver of Transylvania 8-1 in the first round before falling to Estaban and Tony Kanavos of Vincinnes 8-2. The pair bounced back Sunday beating Brent Parshall and Chris Atallah of Albion 9-7.

Scott and Schenck placed fourth at No. 1 singles losing to David Jackson and Jaime Esteban of Vincennes 8-3 in the first round. After an 8-5 win over Parker Gregory and Kyle Clayton of Transylvania in the semi-finals Saturday, the duo defeated Jon Vandenberg and Brandon Still of Albion 8-2 Sunday.

The Polar Bears will return to action Monday with a 3:30 pm match at area-rival Bluffton.
