Huelsman scores twice as Men's Soccer gets past Carroll (Wis.) 2-1 in NCAA Tournamnent thriller

WHEATON, Ill. — Freshman Christian Huelsman scored two goals, including the match-winner with 29 seconds left in the second overtime, to lead Ohio Northern over Carroll (Wis.) 2-1 Saturday night in the second round of the NCAA Division III Men’s Soccer Tournament at Joe Bean Stadium.

The Polar Bears advance to the sectionals next weekend with a 19-5-1 record, while the Pioneers end their season with an 18-4 mark.

Huelsman scored the winner off an assist from Adam Ross with 109:31 gone in the contest. The goal was the team-best and Ohio Athletic Conference leading 18th of the season.

Ross fired a shot froma bout 10 yards out that was deflected by CU goalie Stanislaw Miaskowski, but Huelsman was there for the rebound and scored into a wide-open net from close range.

Ohio Northern out-shot Carroll 28-19 for the match.

Huelsman put the Polar Bears up 1-0 with his 17th goal of the season just 16:30 into the match, when he drilled in a free ball from about 30 yards out.

"We are excited to be able to advance against such a talented team," ONU head coach Brent Ridenour said. "Every season we try to keep getting better and this is the furthest we've ever been in the NCAA Tournament. The Ohio Athletic Conference is so tough year in and year out that it really prepared us for NCAA Tournament play. Aaron Collins had another outstanding game. I thought our defense played terrific for the second strraight night."

The Pioneers tied the contest at 1-1 just before halftime on a goal by Craig Carlson off an assist by Bram Daelemans at the 41:30 mark.

Neither team registered a goal in the second 45 minutes, sending the contest into overtime.

Northern played with a man advantage for the final 3:01 of the second overtime after Carroll’s Dona Lado picked up a red card.

ONU advanced to the second round with a 4-1 victory over No. 17 Wheaton (Ill.) on Friday night.

Northern’s will play the winner of Sunday’s second round contest between No. 4-ranked Hobart (N.Y.) and Cortland State (N.Y.).

The Sectionals will be either Nov. 21-22 or Nov. 22-23. The site and dates will be announced Monday.
