Hillis, Timperman, Gibbs win flights to lead Women’s Tennis at Oberlin Inv

OBERLIN — Jacki Hillis, Kristin Timperman and Katie Gibbs each won flight championships to lead the Ohio Northern women’s tennis team at the non-scoring Oberlin Invitational Saturday and Sunday.

Hillis won the Singles Pink Flight (No. 6 singles), defeating Teitelbaum of Oberlin 7-6(4), 6-2; Marshall of Baldwin-Wallace 7-5, 6-1 and Robertson of Oberlin 6-1, 6-3.

She then combined with Gibbs to win the Doubles Green Flight (No. 3 doubles) by defeating Hayden and Robertson of Oberlin 8-5; Halusker and Brown of BW 8-3 and Trampert and Greene of BW 8-3.

Timperman won the Singles Orange Flight (No. 5 singles) by defeating Brooks of Malone 6-0, 6-0; Brown of Oberlin 6-2, 6-2 and Halusker of BW 3-6, 6-1, 6-1.

The Polar Bears were second of seven teams with three flight championships.

No. 4-ranked Denison won five singles an two doubles flights and No. 6-ranked Mary Washington (Va.) won one singles and one doubles flight.

Liz Bajusz finished fourth in the Singles Purple Flight (No. 4 singles), Jacqualine Sammon was sixth in the Singles Green Flight (No. 3 singles), Bridget Larson was seventh in the Singles Quad Flight (No. 2 singles) and Kaitlyn Macdonald was eighth in the Singles Yellow Flight (No. 1 singles).

In doubles play, Macdonald and Larson were sixth in the Blue Flight (No. 1 doubles) and Bajusz and Sammon were sixth in the Yellow Flight (No. 2 doubles).

The Polar Bears will open the home portion of their 2008-09 schedule when they play host to the ONU-Adidas Classic Tuesday at University Courts.

Ohio Northern will host Northwestern Ohio at 2 pm and Bluffton at 7 pm.
