Grapplers post 2-2 record at Monon Bell Classic

CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind., -- The Ohio Northern wrestling team posted a 2-2 record at the Monon Bell Duals at Wabash (Ind.) on Saturday.

The Polar Bears (9-11 overall) defeated Trine (Ind.) 19-15 and fell to Division II Indianapolis (Ind.) 21-18 Saturday morning. Northern then topped Knox (Ill.) 35-6 and fell to Muskegon (Mich.) Community College 26-15 Saturday afternoon.

Luke Miller went 3-0 and Drew Michel, Mick Letcher and Matt Alexander each went 3-1 on the day.

Northern was able to defeat Trine (Ind.) 19-15 in the first match of the day. Jeff Penny pinned Gregory Janisse at 3:50 while Mick Letcher was able to notch a major decision with a 20-7 victory over Kyle Pittman.

Miller, Matt Alexander, and Michel were all able to gain decisions. Miller defeated George Markou 8-2. Alexander was able to hold of Louis Posa to earn the hard fought 3-1 decision, while Michel put away Alex Fleet 7-4.

The Polar Bears lost their next contest to Division II Indianapolis (Ind.) by a score of 21-18. Indianapolis won the first four matches before Miller and Billy Painter earned victories at 157 and 165 respectively. Miller defeated Cory Fornal 5-2, while Painter defeated Jacob Blackwell 6-4.

Alexander defeated Keith Smith 9-3, and Michel defeated Sam Johnson in a close 3-1 decision.

In the third match of the day, Northern defeated Knox (Ill.) 35-6. At 149 Letcher pinned Dugan O’Conner at 1:15 to secure the victory.

Both Kyle King (141) and Alexander (184) were able to win by major decision with both winning by a score of 10-2 over Charley Deutsch and Martin Dertz respectively.

Painter (165), Collin Swick (174) and Michel (197) all won by decision. Painter over Daniel Stafford 10-6, Swick over Aaron Barnett 6-2, and Michel with a close 3-2 victory over Alex Faulkner.

Northern lost its last match to Muskegon (Mich.) Community College by a score of 26-15. Letcher moved his record to 3-1 on the day with an 11-5 decision over Zach Shaw.

Jeff Penny (133) and King (141) won by forfeit to account for the rest of the Polar Bear’s points.

Northern will return to action Tuesday with an Ohio Athletic Conference dual at Baldwin-Wallace on Tuesday.
