ADA – The No. 23-ranked Ohio Northern women’s soccer team dropped a hard fought match to Denison, falling 1-0 Wednesday at the ONU Soccer Field.

The Polar Bears drop to 6-2-2 overall while Big Red improve to 7-2-1.

The game was primarily a defensive match up with both teams playing hard.  Sophomore keeper Kristen DeWees made nine saves in goal for the Polar Bears, several of which were spectacular against uncontested Denison attackers.

Things were looking up for the Polar Bears when Chelsea Albert rocketed a shot that narrowly hit the crossbar and deflected out to end the offensive threat.

But Denison was able to capitalize less than a minute later as Maggie Hoskin created a breakaway after a Northern turnover.  Hoskin took the breakaway and was able to beat DeWees for the deciding, and only, goal of the game with just 58 seconds left before intermission.

Northern returns to action on Saturday as they take on Muskingum at the ONU Soccer Field for the first game in Ohio Athletic Conference play this season. Game time is 2 pm.
