Cummings, Immler, Paul named 1st Team Academic All-District IV
Fri, 05/30/2008 - 8:11am -- tglonSix Ohio Northern male athletes earned At-Large Academic All-Ohio Athletic Conference honors as voted upon by conference's ten faculty representatives.
Seniors Chase Cummings (Tulsa, Okla./Liberty-Benton), Wes Immler (Lorain/Amherst Steele) and juniors Ryan Paul (West Milton/Milton-Union) and Kyle Webb (Wapakoneta) earned First Team honors while junior David Penny (Union/Milton-Union) and Brett Kuhn (Tiffin/Columbian) garnered Honorable Mention honors.
Cummings earns his first Academic All-OAC honors this season. The mechanical engineering major played some of the best golf of his career during the spring. He averaged 75.2 strokes per round over his final ten rounds, including a pair of career-low 71s during that stretch.
At the OAC Championships, Cummings finished tied for third with rounds of 76-77-153 to earn his first career All-OAC honors. He also carded rounds of 75-74-71-220 at the OAC Spring Invitational to finish tied for second.
Cummings finished the season second on the team with a 79.3 stroke average and ends his career with an 82.6 average over 59.5 tournament rounds.
Immler, a chemistry major, earned his third straight Academic All-OAC honors and his second consecutive First Team honors.
The senior was consistently one of ONU's top golfers, playing in 12 tournaments and finishing as one of five Polar Bears with a sub-80 stroke average at 79.9. Immler recorded three top-10 finishes including taking medalist honors at the ONU Tri-Match during the fall.
Ten of his 20 rounds were in the 70s with the lowest being a 74 in the final round of the Mount Union Fall Invitational.
Paul has now earned First Team Academic All-OAC honors each of the last two season. The business management major is also a two-time All-OAC selection.
This season, he was 15-7 in singles (12-5 at No. 3), 15-8 in doubles (12-7 at No. 2) and is 30-15 overall. In his career, Paul is 39-25 in singles, 53-19 in doubles and 92-44 overall. His 53 doubles wins ranks tenth all-time at ONU.
Webb earned his second straight First Team Academic All-OAC honors. He is a double major in accounting and international business and is graduating from ONU in just three years.
He had a 12-9 overall mark in singles competition for the tennis team this season, playing primarily at the No. 5 and 6 spots. He finishes his career with a 33-26 overall record in three seasons.
Penny earned Academic All-OAC Honorable Mention honors for the second straight season. He ended the year with a 29-10 record and a perfect 4-0 in OAC bouts.
After winning the 125-pound OAC Title in 2007, Penny finished runner-up this season and earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Championships. At the NCAAs, he finished just one win shy of earning All-American honors for the second straight season.
Penny also finished third at the ONU Invitational and fourth at the Wheaton (Ill.) Pete Wilson Invitational.
Kuhn earns Academic All-OAC honors for the first time in his career. He won four OAC Title this winter as a member of the 200 Freestyle Relay, 400 Freestyle Relay, 400 Medley Relay and as an individual in the 100 Freestyle. He now has a total of 11 OAC Titles in his career.
The senior from Tiffin has also earned All-OAC honors a remarkable 18 times as a Polar Bear. He finished runner-up in the 50 Freestyle, 200 Freestyle and 200 Medley Relay at the 2008 OAC Championships.
Kuhn owns the school record in the 100 Freestyle and is part of the school record 200 Freestyle, 400 Freestyle and 400 Medley Relay teams.
The academic award winners are selected by the OAC faculty representatives. To be eligible for Academic All-OAC, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.25 cumulative GPA, be a starter or key reserve and be in at least her second year of participation in the sport.
