Alumni Concert Celebrates ONU’s Jazz Legacy

The Ohio Northern University Alumni Jazz band will reunite for an afternoon of music and memories on Sunday, Oct. 19, at 2 p.m. in the Freed Center for the Performing Arts.

The Alumni Jazz Band was founded in 1991 by the late Dr. Edwin L. Williams as a way to showcase some of ONU's best jazz band alumni. For more than 30 years, ONU jazz bands have held campus-wide auditions, drawing members from all professional fields - music, pharmacy, education, engineering, law and more - and turning them into lifelong lovers of jazz.

Fifteen Years of Dance at ONU

To celebrate the 15th anniversary of the dance program at Ohio Northern University, dance alumni will collaborate with current members for a performance that pays homage to the program and revisits favorite performances. The Freed Center for the Performing Arts will host two showings: Saturday, Oct. 11, at 8 p.m., and Sunday, Oct. 12, at 2 p.m. There will be a pre-show discussion on Oct. 11 at 7:15 p.m.

Returning alumni will share their expertise as teachers, dancers and choreographers.

Ohio Northern Presents Distinguished Alumni Awards

The Alumni Association of Ohio Northern University presented Distinguished Alumni Awards during the Alumni Awards Banquet on May 31.

The awards, recognizing outstanding service and loyalty, were presented to Edward "Ed" Gmyrek, BSEd '65; Floyd Keith, BSEd '70, H of F '03; Michael Rencheck, BSEE '83; Patricia "Pat" Parteleno, BSPh '90, PharmD '96; James Patsiavos, BSPh '53; and Judy (Reed) Weir, BSBA '60. The banquet was part of Northern's 2008 Alumni Weekend, held May 30 through June 1.

Third District Court of Appeals Coming to ONU

The Ohio Third District Court of Appeals will hear oral arguments in one criminal case in the Moot Court Room of Ohio Northern University's Pettit College of Law at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, March 18.

The oral arguments will be held before a three-judge panel consisting of presiding Judge Stephen R. Shaw and Judges Richard M. Rogers and John R. Willamowski. Rogers, Shaw and Willamowski are all Ohio Northern law alumni.

ONU Celebrates Black History Month

Ohio Northern University will commemorate Black History Month this February with a number of scheduled events. Several campus organizations will collaborate to provide diverse opportunities to celebrate African-American heritage. Here is the schedule of February's activities:

Two alumni contribute more than $4 million to ONU

Ohio Northern University has received more than $4 million from alumni estate contributions.

The estate of Dr. Anthony and Doris Martin provides more than $2.5 million for the benefit of the existing Dr. Anthony J. and Doris E. Martin Pre-Medical Student Scholarship Fund. The University additionally received $1.5 million from the estate of Dwight L. Carhart for the benefit of the Pettit College of Law and to establish the Fred L. Carhart Memorial Program in Legal Ethics.

ONU receives $3 million gift from Beeler estate

Ohio Northern University has received a gift of more than $3 million from the estate of Eugene A. Beeler.

Beeler, who passed away in October of 2006, graduated from ONU in 1949 with a bachelor of arts and science degree and a major in accounting. Beeler was a certified public accountant and a founding partner in Howard & Beeler in Lima, Ohio, now known as Lentol, Violet Kientz & Co.

Ohio Northern Student Receives Award of Excellence

Ohio Northern University senior, Jeremy Lee Schroeder, a civil engineering major from Columbus Grove, Ohio, has received an Award of Excellence from the honor society Phi Kappa Phi. The award will enable him to pursue a master's degree in civil engineering at the University of Virginia.

Schroeder is one of only 100 students nationwide to be honored by Phi Kappa Phi Fellowships and Awards of Excellence.
