Privacy of Student Records

Under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (PL 93-380), as amended, ONU has defined the following as directory information that may be released without the student's specific approval: (1) student name, (2) home and local address and telephone numbers, (3) date and place of birth, (4) major fields of study and college of enrollment, (5) degrees, honors and awards received, (6) class (year of study), (7) dates of attendance, (8) most recent institution attended, (9) previous degrees earned and attending institutions, (10) participation in officially recognized activities and sports, (11) height and weight of members of athletic teams, (12) parents name and address, and (15) enrollment status (full time or part time).

Students may withhold directory information by notifying the Office of the Registrar in writing within two weeks of the first day of fall term. Requests to withhold directory information will remain in effect until rescinded by the student or death.

Within the institution, information from educational records of a personally identifiable nature is limited to faculty and staff only for legitimate purposes in the student's educational interests.
