Student Computer Recommendations

The Office of Information Technology does not recommend a specific vendor for computer purchases. Both Microsoft Windows and the Apple Macintosh systems are supported. However, the following minimum requirements should be met when purchasing a new computer. The College of Law and the College of Business Administration recommend a laptop.

Hardware:

  • Processor Speed: 2.0 GHz or greater
  • Memory: 1 GB of RAM or greater
  • Hard Drive: 80 GB or greater
  • Optical Drive: CD-RW/DVD-ROM combo or DVD-RW Drive

Operating System:

  • Windows: XP Professional or Vista
  • Apple Macintosh: Mac OS 10.5 or greater

Software Provided by the University:

  • Windows Vista Business
  • Microsoft Office 2007 (Windows)
  • Microsoft Office 2008 (Mac OS)
  • Symantec Antivirus (Windows and Mac OS)

Extra Considerations:

  • Wireless: 802.11b/g is available in most academic and residential areas.
  • Wired network ports are available in residential rooms (network cable provided at the IT DOC).
  • Printers are accessible in academic labs but not readily available within the residence halls. Consider purchasing a personal printer.
  • Speakers
  • A USB Flash/Thumb drive
  • An external mouse for a laptop

Please install the latest operating system patches available before you arrive on campus, or you may not be able to connect to the campus network.

Technical support is available at the Drop Off Center located in Northern Commons room 121. Students can take computers there for issues that cannot be resolved by e-mail to help-desk@onu.edu or a phone call to campus extension 1111.
