Course Information

Introductory Course

Students will study the history of the University of Havana and the city of Havana; the customs and culture of the Cuban people; and state and non-governmental Cuban organizations. Students will have extensive tours of Havana and frequent interaction with the Cuban people.

Spanish

Theory and practice of written and oral Spanish. Students will work in groups to enhance their Spanish language skills.

Cuba: Government, economic, social development and international relations

The Cuban social and political system. Students will study the organization and laws of the Cuban state, the achievements and challenges of the Cuban economy, social development in Cuba and Cuba's international relations policy.

Coastal Marine Studies

Overview of the Caribbean marine environment. Students will study biological diversity, the natural processes of ecosystems, present and predicted human impacts and conservation methods as part of integrated coastal management.

Strategic Management

Introduction to enterprise management. Students will work in groups to examine current topics in society and enterprise management as they apply to the Cuban experience. Topics include challenges and directives for the new millennium, leadership in the 21st century, changing energy options and upper management challenges and competition.

Environmental Management

A comprehensive study of the interaction of business enterprises, government agencies and communities in the management of the environment. Examination of corporate policy, strategy and culture in the development of an environmental management plan. The relevance of international standards (ISO 14001).

History of U.S.-Cuban Relations

Students will study the historic interactions between the United States and Cuba, focusing on three instances: The Fillibuster Era of the mid Nineteenth-Century, the Spanish American War of 1898, and the Cold War. They will compare American sources with how these events are interpreted in Cuban historiography, and in the Cuban popular culture.
