Summer Honors Institute to Continue at Ohio Northern University

An Ohio Department of Education (ODE) grant will make it possible for Ohio Northern University to host its annual Summer Honors Institute (SHI) for gifted and talented Ohio high school students. This grant marks the fifth consecutive year of the program.

Professor Awarded NIH Grant

Dr. Mark Olah, assistant professor of pharmacology at the Ohio Northern University Raabe College of Pharmacy, has received a National Institutes of Health (NIH) Academic Research Enhancement Award (AREA) to help in the development of drugs that promote or inhibit growth of blood vessels. These drugs may be useful in treating heart disease, diabetes and other diseases.

Olah will examine the proteins and cell signaling processes involved in promoting endothelial cell growth and migration with a focus on the intracellular protein known as Epac1.

Elevator Pitch Competition

The first CEO (Collegiate Entrepreneurs Organization) Elevator Pitch Competition involved 11 student competitors from pharmacy, engineering, arts and sciences, and business administration in idea presentations lasting 90 seconds.

ONU's Heartburn Awareness Challenge Receives Award

Through the efforts of student pharmacists, ONU's Heartburn Awareness Challenge has received its second regional award of the year. The award, "It Starts With One," was received at the Region 4 American Pharmacists Association Academy of Student Pharmacists (APhA-ASP) Midyear Regional Meeting. APhA-ASP chapters throughout Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois and Wisconsin presented their top patient care projects for 2008, and ONU placed first.

Pharmacy Clinical Skills Competition

ONU Students' Society of Health-System Pharmacists (SSHP) is congratulating Samantha Cunningham, fifth-year pharmacy student from Adena, Ohio, and Catherine Taylor, a fifth-year pharmacy student from Powell, Ohio, winners of the annual clinical skills competition. They competed against seven other teams, demonstrating skills in assessing patient information and current therapy, identifying treatment goals, and recommending a pharmacy care plan. A panel of evaluators determined the winner of the competition using the ASHP criteria provided.

NCPA Presidential Scholarship

Jenn Waitzman, a fifth-year pharmacy student from Bellbrook, Ohio, and a member of ONU's National Community Pharmacists Association's (NCPA) student chapter, has been awarded an NCPA Presidential Scholarship for the 2008-09 academic year from the NCPA Foundation. She was one of 18 students from pharmacy schools across the country to receive the scholarship.

Grant Received

David F. Kisor, Pharm.D., professor of pharmacokinetics, has received a grant of $5,100 from Applied Medical Research to continue research on a new dosage form of aspirin. This is a follow up to a study begun last year.

 

Pharmacy Students to Provide Medical Counseling and Heartburn Education in Kenya

Fourteen Ohio Northern University pharmacy students and Kristen Finley, associate professor of pharmacy, will travel to Kenya to provide medical counseling and education about heartburn from Nov. 27 through Dec. 18.

These sixth-year pharmacy students will collaborate with physicians, nurses and medical students during the three-week trip to Africa. Members of the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine will travel on the mission trip with the ONU students.

Pharmacy Professors Receive Grants for Research

Dr. Tarek Mahfouz and Dr. Janelle S. Crossgrove-Hart of Ohio Northern University's Raabe College of Pharmacy have each received a $10,000 New Investors Program grant from the American Association of College of Pharmacy (AACP).
