APhA-ASP Chapter Wins National Award

Ohio Northern University's American Pharmacist Association Academy of Student Pharmacists (APhA-ASP) chapter won the 2008 National Patient Care Award in the Heartburn Awareness Challenge at the annual APhA national conference in San Antonio, Texas, on April 3-4.

ONU captured top honors against 69 APhA-ASP pharmacy chapters competing in a patient care project. The award is based on originality, level of student participation, level of collaboration with other campus organizations and overall impact of heartburn education on the public health of the local community.

Sullivan Honored for Service

Donald L. Sullivan, Ph.D., professor of pharmacy practice and chair of the department of pharmacy practice, is the 2009 recipient of the Jack L. Beal Post-baccalaureate Alumni Award from The Ohio State University.

This award, in its 21st year, is presented to alumni of The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy who have made outstanding contributions to the pharmaceutical sciences and the profession of pharmacy. This is the highest award that Ohio State can give to a pharmacy alumnus. Sullivan will receive the award on May 8.

ONU to Dedicate New Pharmacy Student Lounge

The Ohio Northern University Raabe College of Pharmacy will dedicate a new student lounge on the second floor of the Robertson Evans Pharmacy Building at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, March 24. Construction of the new student lounge was made possible by a philanthropic investment by Giant Eagle Pharmacy.

Continuous Achievement Scholarship Honors Academic Improvement

After four years of planning, Ohio Northern is now offering the Continuous Achievement Scholarship to one student in each undergraduate college.

Professor to Speak on Medicinal and Food Plants of the Southwest

Dr. David H. Kinder, professor of medicinal chemistry in the Raabe College of Pharmacy at Ohio Northern University, will speak on "Medicinal and Food Plants of the Southwest: What the Ancestral Puebloans Knew About Climate Change (Probably)" on Thursday, March 26, at 6 p.m., in room 151 of the Hakes-Pierstorf Family Pharmacy Education Center at ONU.

Professors Receive Certification

Karen Kier, BSPH '82, Ph.D., professor of clinical pharmacy, has earned the designation of Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist (BCPS) from the Board of Pharmaceutical Specialists. This is pharmacy's highest credential in the practice of pharmacotherapy.

Through board certification, pharmacotherapy specialists demonstrate a defined level of education and training, as well as mastery of the knowledge and skills necessary to meet the public's demand for expert pharmaceutical care.

Pharmacy Majors Put Knowledge into Practice

Catherine TaylorFifth-year pharmacy majors Catherine Taylor and Samantha Cunningham understand the importance of putting their clinical knowledge into practice. Taylor, from Powell, Ohio, and Cunningham of Adena, Ohio, proved their pharmaceutical prowess in Ohio Northern University's Clinical Skills Competition. Not only did they win the local competition, they secured a spot at the National Clinical Skills Competition in Orlando, Fla.

Pharmacy Students Visit Lexi-Comp

Lexi-Comp field trip Sixteen ONU pharmacy students along with Dr. Sekhar Mamidi, assistant professor of pharmacy practice and an advisor of the American Pharmacists Association Academy of Student Pharmacists, visited Lexi-Comp in Hudson, Ohio, on Friday, Jan. 19.

Lexi-Comp, according to its Web site, is "an industry-leading provider of drug information and clinical content for the health care industry."

Pharmacy Students Participate in Patient Counseling Competition

The American Pharmacists Association (APhA) Patient Counseling Competition was held in ONU's pharmacy building on Friday, Jan. 9. A large number of pharmacy students counseled mock patients in 15-minute increments throughout the day, competing for the grand prize of an all-expenses-paid trip to the National APhA-ASP meeting in San Antonio, Texas, in April.

Catherine Taylor, a fifth-year pharmacy student from Powell, Ohio, took part in the competition, and said she thought the experience would have been beneficial to pharmacy students in all years.
