Talent Awards

High school seniors who have been accepted to Ohio Northern University as English majors in the College of Arts & Sciences are invited to compete for Talent Awards of up to $6,000, renewable annually as long as a grade point average of 3.0 (B) is maintained. The minimum award is $1,500 for winning students.

Following admission to the University, students must submit a portfolio of original writing by February 1. The portfolio should contain a minimum of six writing samples (maximum 10) which will be judged by a panel of English professors. The English department will then make recommendations to the Financial Aid Office where all decisions regarding student awards will be made.

Send portfolios to: Talent Awards, c/o Dr. Eva McManus, Chair; Department of English, Ohio Northern University, Ada, OH 45810. Materials will not be returned. Sample portfolio items may include essays and research papers written for English classes, articles written for the school newspaper, original creative writing (poetry, fiction, nonfiction, drama or screenplay), selections from a personal journal, etc. We encourage students to submit a variety of material. A note from a sponsoring English teacher must accompany the portfolio, attesting that the writing is the student's own work. The Talent Awards will be available to students regardless of what English Department track they intend to pursue: literature, professional writing, journalism, language arts education, or creative writing.

The Talent Awards are also offered through the annual ONU English Department high school poetry contest for Ohio high schools. Only finalists and winners in the competition (approximately 12 to 15 annually) are eligible. They, too, must be admitted to the University as an English major in the College of Arts & Sciences before submitting a portfolio. Poetry contest finalists and winners are guaranteed a minimum award of $1,500 but must maintain a 3.0 (B) grade point average for the award to be renewable.
