foundation studiesDiscover [your] True North. When you send Ohio Northern your application forms, prospective students could be automatically considered for a variety of merit-based scholarships. However, you shouldn't stop there. There are many more ways for you to secure additional financial aid from the government, the University and other institutions.

Financial aid can take many forms, including grants from the government and from the University, low-interest student loans with deferred payment schedules, or work-study funds. All of these can help defray the cost of a college education.

Scholarships

Talent Award Scholarships
Talent awards are available to incoming art & design students. A review of a student’s portfolio determines the amount of the award. Consideration for talent awards will be held on Saturday, February 13, 2010, or by scheduling a portfolio review with the department.

Department Scholarships
Two scholarships are given annually to art & design majors during ONU’s Honors Day events. The Shelley C. Petrillo Scholarships are presented to an art & design senior and junior. Criteria for the scholarship include scholastic achievement, artistic ability and department involvement.

Other University Scholarships
The University offers students numerous scholarships through the Admissions’ Academic Achievement Day competitions. Applications for admission must be received by December 1 each year to be considered for a Trustee Award, President’s Award or for an Academic Achievement Award. For information regarding these scholarships, please contact the admissions office at 419.772.2260.

I have had so many great experiences at ONU. I have traveled to England and studied art in Italy! During my years at Ohio Northern, I also plan to apply to different graduate schools and for a Fulbright Scholarship, most likely to go to India. So, if all goes well, I will be traveling to another country to make and study art as a Fulbright! Then, I will be attending graduate school to study painting.

Financial Aid

Department Employment
There are a variety of jobs available in the department for students eligible for work study funds through the financial aid program. There are also special skills jobs available. The art & design department views these work assignments important to the operation of the department and expect that students hired for these duties treat them with the same regard.

A listing of departmental jobs is on file in the art & design office and the financial office. Available times for work as gallery attendants and department office clerks are arranged through the department secretary. Computer lab monitors are hired through the graphic design program. Other department jobs include studio assistants, gallery director assistants, slide librarians and student designers.

student sculpturePortfolio Scholarship Day
Each year, the department of art & design at Ohio Northern University invites all incoming students to participate in our annual Portfolio Scholarship Day at the Wilson Art Center. This is an exciting opportunity to compete for a Talent Award based solely on your submitted portfolio. The day includes portfolio critique sessions, drawing sessions and lunch on campus.

To qualify for a Talent Award, you must have already applied and been accepted to Ohio Northern University as an art or design major.

If you cannot attend the Portfolio Scholarship Day in person, but would like your work included in the evaluation process for admission and for a talent award, you can submit your work in digital or slide format. (The department cannot be responsible for any original artwork sent through the mail.)

Once the A&D Faculty Committee decides on the Talent Award recipients, the offices of admissions and financial aid receive the recommendations. At that point, the office of financial aid sends out the award amount, generally after March and usually no later than May. The award is incorporated into an aid package (should the FAFSA be filed), or it is sent as a merit award (should no other aid be sought). A member of the financial aid staff is available on Portfolio Scholarship Day to answer questions and review the policies and procedures relative to these awards and other financial assistance.

Transfer students can apply for a Talent Award through Portfolio Scholarship Day as long as they meet the requirements for admission and produce work that is deemed qualified. They simply need to meet the same standards as first-time students enrolling at ONU.
