Design Lecture: Richard Saul Wurman, sponsored by AIGA/Detroit and U. of Michigan
Thursday, March 12, 2009 5:10pm
Michigan Theater
603 E. Liberty Street, Ann Arbor, Michigan 48104
Richard Saul Wurman (born 1935 in Philadelphia) is an American
architect and graphic designer. He is considered a pioneer in the
practice of making information understandable. He has written and
designed over 80 books and created the TED conferences. In 1976 he
coined the phrase information architect out of his reaction to a
society that daily creates massive amounts of information, but with
little care or order. He created the popular ACCESS travel guide books
which were innovative in their use of mapping content by neighborhood.
Simple, but effective use of colored text allowed the reader to quickly
separate, locate and evaluate restaurants, museums, parks, and other
categorical destinations. The design concept was based on how we seek
information, in this case, by location. With this series of books,
Wurman firmly established the purpose of information architecture. He
is also a 2004 AIGA Medalist.

Saturday, December 6, 2008 | 3p.m.
Join the ONU Student Art League on a trip to Columbus! With over 20
years of tradition, the Short North is renowned for the buzz of
"Gallery Hop."
The first Saturday of every month, thousands of visitors converge on the strip, the epicenter of the High Street Experience. They come to celebrate art and partake in an evening of sights, sounds, food, shopping, and cosmopolitan fun. Though many shops are open earlier, the Gallery Hop officially starts at 4PM and runs to 10PM with restaurants staying open considerably later.
On a typical Hop, over 40 galleries and non-traditional art venues (think restaurants, boutiques, and salons) spotlight the best of established and emerging Ohio-based artists. They also feature the works of nationally and internationally acclaimed artists.
Also during this Hop, catch the Warhol Express from the Short North to the Wexner Center or from the Wexner Center to the Short North. The Warhol Express is a free direct shuttle (continuous run every 20 minutes) that will pick up and drop-off at La Fogata Grill (790 N. AIGA Field Trip: Designing the Voting Experience and Information in Everyday Life
Thursday, October 9, 2008
In 2001, a group of designers from AIGA, Design for Democracy, launched
an initiative to "re-enfranchise" voters through design. Cheyenne
Medina and Gretchen Schulfer worked to redesign and improve the voting
experience for US elections as part of the initiative from 2001-2006.
Projects included redesigned ballots and information for voters;
guidelines for navigating a polling place; behind the scenes poll
worker administration material; and national models for the Election
Assistance Commission. Cheyenne Medina and Gretchen Schulfer are
currently working on new initiatives to demonstrate the importance of
design in science, education, business and sustainability.

AIGA|ONU Student Chapter Motivates Campus Community To Vote
Get Out the Vote, a national AIGA Design for Democracy initiative since the 2000 election,
enables designers to engage in the public arena by contributing to a
coordinated voter mobilization campaign. The 2008 poster campaign
builds on the efforts made in 2004,
when participants created more than 50,000 AIGA posters that were
displayed in public places in communities across the nation and made
available as online PDFs for anyone to download, print and post
independently.
The Ohio Northern student chapter of AIGA invited student designers from the department of art & design to create nonpartisan posters. The goal was to inspire the ONU student body to participate in the electoral process and vote for a presidential candidate in the 2008 general election.
A poster exhibit is now on display in the Elzay Gallery Lobby (until Nov. 5). Out of the nine submitted posters, two were selected for campus distribution.
By motivating eligible citizens to register and turn out on election day, Get Out the Vote fulfills an ongoing AIGA objective of demonstrating the value of design to the public, public officials and business by providing a clear call to action for an activity that is important to everyone.
For questions related to ONU's Get Out the Vote campaign, please contact the department of art & design. Go to http://www.flickr.com/photos/27428308@N04/ to see more posters.

(also in comics form), in which he outlined twelve "revolutions" that
he argued would be keys to the growth and success of comics as a
popular and creative medium. Finally, in 2006, he released Making
Comics. Following publication, he went on a tour with his family that
included all 50 U.S. states and parts of Europe.
