Included in the second edition of the “Creative Colleges” guide, the department of art & design is nationally recognized as one of the top 200 creative programs in the country. The department offers four majors and two degree programs: the bachelor of fine arts (BFA) and the bachelor of arts (BA). The BFA degree program features a rigorous course of study in art and design. The BA degree offers an intense study in art and design along with a major or minor in another discipline.

Within either of these degree programs, students can pursue majors in:
• advertising design
• art education
• graphic design
• studio arts

Concentrations in the department of art & design are only offered in the studio arts major (BFA degree):
• two-dimensional
• three-dimensional

Ohio Northern's A&D department prepares students to become creative and productive artists and/or designers in a complex and changing world. Our educational program integrates traditional and contemporary methods in art and design, exposing students to a wide-range of forms and mediums. Students also engage in many enriching, outside-the-classroom learning experiences such as a monthly guest artist program, professional internships, student teaching, juried art exhibits, field trips, study abroad programs and work on University publications.

Other programs for art and design students
Students in the art and design program are encouraged, but not required, to pursue a minor or option to add depth to their areas of study. The following minors and options are most beneficial to the studio arts, graphic design, advertising design or art education major:

Museum studies minor (department of history, politics and justice): Students may choose between the managerial or the curatorial tracks.

Psychology minor (department of psychology and sociology): Students interested in art therapy may pursue a total of 40 credit hours for the minor.

Electronic media and broadcasting minor (department of communication and theatre arts): Provides students with creative expressions, diversified technological expertise and the practical training in writing for the media, media production and media management.

Multimedia design and development option (department of technological studies): Introduces students to programming, photography and electronic media design.

Business minor (College of Business Administration): Students may pursue accounting, business or economics; the option is designed to provide a business focus for students within their art/design career goals.

Marketing minor (College of Business Administration): A total of 36 hours are required for the minor; the minor is design to provide a marketing focus for students.

Public relations minor (department of communication arts): Minors learn how to conduct research, plan programs, produce communication materials and evaluate programs.

Biology or forensic option (department of biological and allied health sciences): Students interested in medical illustration may select one of these programs.
